Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
Thanks SurpriseinNB. I wasn't aware of the 24 hour period but what you said about already being in a hospital if something goes sideways is what I was thinking. The only benefit to going to a surgery center is they are less likely to have chronic MRSA or C-diff problems and it's cheaper of course. I'd rather pay a few thousand more for the peace of mind. Of course then I start worrying about infection. Gah.

Thanks fiestyfelix for sharing your experience. I actually was kind of looking forward to the hospital bed. We recently got a new mattress and I hate it. Oh well. Lol. Maybe I should rent a recliner for a couple weeks?

Anybody not staying in hospital?
I slept on the couch for three weeks. Of course not on the chaise lounge part ... because I wouldn't want to steal that from my chocolate lab... LOL. I found the couch more comfortable than the bed.

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
I don't know that I would bother to rent a recliner. You really may find that you are quite comfortable. I was not in any pain at all, and was in bed only at night to sleep. During the day I was either up and about or sitting in a chair. Best of luck to you!

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
I was swabbed for MRSA and VRE as part of my pre-op. If I'd been positive for either, I would still have had my surgery, but I would have recovered in an isolation room.
I don't know if this is usual in the States, though.

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
Likewise. At home I sleep on a futon on the floor. Various well-meaning folks told me that I "had to" rent a recliner, a "real bed" or both. I didn't do either. Once I got home, I slept quite comfortably on my futon at night. When I took naps during the nap, I slept on a pile of pillows in the living room. But aside from naps, most of the day I was sitting upright, standing or walking.
The hospital bed was okay but slightly soft for me and my lower back. I took ibuprofen pretty regularly my first week home, as much for my lower back as for the soreness and twingey-ness from surgery!

Anybody not staying in hospital?
Hi there. This is my first post! Surgery tomorrow and I'm not planning to stay in the hospital, which for me is a good thing since id rather be in my own home and bed. Hopefully your doctor will listen to you , tho, and you're able to do what's best for you. Good luck!

I am nervous enough about this, I don't really want to deal with going home and try to manage my own pain the first day. Also don't want to remove my own catheter.
Now he has me scheduled to go home the same day from the hospital.
Anyone else doing this?

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
Hi Mnazz good luck with your surgery!
SurprisedinNB you didn't have a problem getting up and down onto the futon? I have a bad back and hips/pelvis so I'm a bit worried the surgery will aggravate that too.
Czeiler we can't steal the good spot from the fur babies. Lol. I don't have a comfy couch, just two antique sofas. Not conducive to relaxing and dealing with pain.
Coughy16 maybe I'll wait and see. I kind of don't want to rent furniture when I'll be vulnerable to germs. Who knows what's been on it? Yuck.
Thanks for the advice ladies.

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
Not a bit. Before I left for the hospital, I shoved my exercise machine over so that the handlebars were next to my bed.
To get up after surgery, I rolled onto my side, bent my legs and then used one arm to help me roll up onto my knees. I could then take hold of the handlebars and steady myself as I stood up.
(Note that this is a variation on the standard "log roll" technique that you can find on YouTube.)
The only time I had trouble with this was first thing in the morning when I really needed to pee and had to hold it while I was going through the standing-up process.
I didn't do anything special to lie down. I just did it without really thinking about it! :-)

Re: Anybody not staying in hospital?
I was shocked when I saw, on my pre-op papers, that I was scheduled as "Outpatient". Turns out, it's the 23-hour thing, and I did spend one night.
I was glad to have the night in the hospital as I needed transfusions through the night (4 hours worth). I was in a lot of pain from my laparascopic gas (shoulders), and my throat was extremely sore (intubation). But, when I woke up the next morning and the doctor told me I "must" get up and walk around (which I thought, he must be crazy to think I was even moving 2 inches), I realized I was not only ready, but wanted to go home. Within a couple of laps around the floor, I was bored and ready to go home.
I, too, was worried about not having a recliner, or a bed with rails, etc. But I never needed any of that. Was able to get up and down with no problems, climbed stairs (I live in a 3-story), no problem, and showered, all within 24 hours of getting home.
I heeded a TON of advice from here, and I'd recommend it all:
--Plan ahead by cooking/freezing food
--Get all major chores out 'da way, lol. Before I went in, I climbed ladders and changed A/C filters, mopped floors, cleaned toilets, etc. (If I was smarter, I'd have just hired a maid).
--Enlist friends/family to come over throughout the first couple of weeks to bring you food, or if you feel good, to take you out
--I found a grocery delivery service, which was such a treat. The 2nd week home, I wanted fresh produce and other goodies. Click, click, click, and my groceries were here.
A few things I prepared, but didn't end up needing:
I put a stepladder with a bar next to my bed, as I was worried I'd need it to get out of bed.
I bought XXL granny panties (ended up preferring the mesh ones they give you in the hospital)
I bought one of those grabber things to get things from high shelves
My motto: prepare for worst-case scenario, which is what I did. I had best-case scenario results: home after 24 hours, extremely smooth recovery, textbook-perfect case, minimal surgery, zero pain/bleeding/discomfort afterwards.
One more thing about sleeping: I'm a stomach sleeper, and I can't sleep on my back. So every night, I'd put two large pillows alongside my body, under the covers, so I could roll over onto either one throughout the night. Allowed me to sleep comfortably, and straight through the night.
A very important part of the healing process is sleep, so figure out how best to get in some great quality sleep.
