TLH: stool softeners pre-hysterectomy

For those that have had their hysterectomy what we're your experiences with stool softener. Do you prefer something like milk of magnesium or stool softener pills to prevent having a hard time pooping after your just?

I used stool softeners regularly, and added milk of mag when needed, until i stopped taking narcotics regularly. Everyone is different, i would be prepared. Your body will let you know what you need after. I had several things on hand i never needed, but found comfort in being prepared just in case (my OCD side i suppose!).

I used colace for about a week beforehand but from pain meds and nerves, surgery, etc still took about 5/6 days and I had to use milk of mag and miralax.

Talk to your doctor to get approval for any OTC meds. This goes before and after surgery.

Miralax for me. Works wonderfully, extremely gentle, and absolutely colorless and tasteless. (It's a white powder that literally vanishes when you mix it into things.) And being a powder, it's very easy to tail off of it gradually by just mixing a tiny amount less of it into things each day. Drink a LOT of liquids while you use it, though.

I try to go as naturally as possible. I asked my dr and she ok'd senna, lots of prune/plum juice and water before. Apple cider is good after you get off pain meds, the pectin helps chelate the heavy metals and helps detox the body.
