Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
Hi,
I can't seem to prepare for surgery. I just lack the will to actually start getting anything ready.
I'm not anxious yet, hopefully that would hold and I won't start freaking out the day or two before.
I need inspiration to get started.
So please share your to do lists.
I'll be having a RALH and she would be keeping me overnight. So items needed for an overnight stay will be much appreciated too. Thank you.
All the best to all sisters having theirs done this week as well. We've got this.

Re: Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
Good thoughts on your upcoming procedure! Mine is on Monday and I totally feel you.
I bought yogurt. I bought dates. I washed my tummy pillow. I packed for a trip a week plus after surgery (big dresses). Bottles of Gatorade are on my dresser. My house is a little messy.
My bag for my surgery isn’t packed. I think I’m bringing my wallet, phone, cords, tummy pillow. I’m wearing to the hospital this blanket/sweatshirt thing my mom got me with leggings. And that’s it. Maybe lip balm. Oh! Because I’m staying on the floor I work on I’m making enchiladas for my coworkers.
But I completely feel you.

Re: Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
A few things that you can add to your list: crystallized or powdered ginger for nausea from the anaesthesia; Gas-X and fennel seeds for gas relief; magnesium-rich dark chocolate and pumpkin seeds for constipation; throat lozenges for soreness from the breathing tube; a notepad or voice recorder, to keep track of your medications and any other important information; face cream; a water bottle. Other helpful items to have on hand for your recovery include peppermint tea, frozen blueberries, whole grain cereal like oatmeal or All Bran, chia seeds, and a psyllium-based product like Metamucil. Also be sure to have something to elevate your feet while you're on the throne, like a Squatty Potty or a low stool, to make those post-op bowel movements easier, by properly aligning the rectum so the poop can pass through more smoothly; other helpful items to have on hand include a few pillows to protect your belly when coughing or sneezing, some loose-fitting clothes, and a grabber for picking up small objects off the floor. Check our " Hints From Members" forum for more suggestions, and be sure to join tomorrow's Open House Chat Thread, where you'll have an opportunity to meet and chat with other sisters who will be having surgery next week. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

Re: Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
I bought some prune juice, GasX, Smooth Move tea and stool softener to have on hand I got a wedge pillow and one of those squooshy ones with the micro-beads. Also got three extension cords to run to the back of the sofa, bedside table, and table between the comfy TV chairs so I can keep things charged up where I expect to be hanging out without having to crawl around looking for outlets. I stocked up on cat food in the 4 lb bags. I moved most of my yarn stash totes up to the spare room and organized all the knitting needles. Oh, and last night I drove to Yarn Folk in Ellensburg WA and bought a bunch of acrylic to knit personalized Xmas stockings for family members and superwash wool for a Charlie Brown sweater for my 3-year old great-nephew ("What's your favorite color?" "Black!") and another bag of nice yarn for me, you know, in case I get inspired. This weekend I'm going to get all the laundry done and put my comfy clothes out where I can easily reach them. I ordered a couple of reacher/grabbers on Amazon that are scheduled for Wednesday delivery. A friend is coming to stay for a few days so I'm leaving groceries for later. I'm staying overnight Thurs at the hospital and am not too worried about packing a bag. Tummy pillow, basic toiletries, ID and phone is about it.
TO DO: Buy cards and stamps for Happy Belated Holidays / Valentine's Day notes because I didn't get cards out this year. Breathe deeply. Exercise moderately. And, remember that things have a way of working out.

Re: Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
I'm also scheduled for open TAH on Wednesday (the 23rd) and feeling overwhelmed! My bag is semi packed - toiletries, sleep shirt(s), robe, slippers and plan to bring a notepad, my cell phone and a small amount of cash. From other posts I've read, looks like I should wear baggy clothes in and home from the hospital. I'm starting to feel "sick to my stomach" just thinking about everything!

Re: Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
Honestly, I hardly prepared for my surgery!
I made sure I had fresh sheets on the bed, a freezer full of food, painkillers and some spare dressings to cover my stitches, and took my phone, charger, a change of clothes (including some larger sized trousers) and a dressing gown to the hospital. That was pretty much it
Especially if you aren't too far from home and have someone willing to pick things up for you, you can be pretty relaxed and just react to how you feel each day.

Another knitter in Washington!!!!!!!!!! At my bedside ... (I don’t have a nightstand. I have a bar cart that acts as a nightstand. With the cpap it works) I put a basket with yarn and needles. On my dresser (which is across from my bed like 10 steps) I put coloring books, dates, crayons, books, hard candy, Gatorade....

Thanks Princess Wolfie -- that helps. We are about half hour from the hospital so I can have someone bring in anything I might need. How about a "substitute" ??

Preparing for hysterectomy- January 23rd
I’m also having my surgery on the 23rd in the UK. Hopefully I’m having a laparoscopic total hysterectomy and should be home on Thursday. So I’ve packed an overnight bag but left other stuff on a bed so that if I need cutting, hubby can just pick stuff up.
Don’t forget earplugs and a sleep mask. I’ve also packed some graze snacks, fruit juice cartons and baby water wipes to freshen up with.
Good luck with everything x
