Surgical menopause. Why would a doctor say this?
My mom is on me to get my ovaries out even if they are healthy. I don't want to. I am 48 and yes, menopause is right around the corner, but I am getting my hysterectomy to feel better and throwing myself into menopause for no reason is not what I want. Anyway, she went to a women's health fair and this well known doctor in her area said once you are past 40, getting your ovaries removed will not make you go into menopause any sooner than you normally would. What the heck??? How can he say that? The minute they are removed you are in menopause, correct? Now she's on me even more even though my doctor and research says there is no reason to get them out. My tubes will be removed and I've told her that's where most ovarian cancer starts. Am I wrong here?

Re: Surgical menopause. Why would a doctor say this?
No, you are not wrong. Removing the ovaries puts us into surgical menopause which is not the same as natural menopause where the ovaries continue to produce beneficial hormones, just in lesser amounts. Finding the right hormone therapy can be a daunting task, though some are lucky enough to find the right dose, method of delivery and hormone combination on the first try. There's no point going through that if you don't have to!
Keep your healthy ovaries just as you would keep any other healthy organs.

That's how I feel! She continues to tell me ovarian cancer is the silent killer and if you don't need them, get rid of them. I think I DO need them in order to keep from going crazy going into complete menopause suddenly. She is battling liver cancer and I think she is just worried I would one day have to go through what she is.

there is no reason to have healthy ovaries removed. you will go into surgical menopause and you do not know how your body will react. i would not let ANYONE talk me into removing healthy ovaries!

I'm sure your mom's concern is intensified since she is dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Let her know that you appreciate her concern but your own research and discussions with your doctor have led you to make the decision you have made. If the topic comes up again, steer it to something else.

Re: Surgical menopause. Why would a doctor say this?
Most ovarian cancers actually start in the Fallopian tubes. And then progress to the ovaries once they are growing. You can get your tubes removed and leave your ovaries. It's a bs not a bso. ( bilateral salpingo as opposed to a bilateral salpingo oopherectomy ). You could ask your consultant about that?

Dear friend,
Your mom is probably in the panic mode and is truly worried about your upcoming surgery. However, ivGree with the advise given here - be true to yourself and make the best decision you can based upon your own best options.
Here is an article that may prove helpful: Should I Keep My Ovaries?
If you look to the right of the article on the page, you will see a list of other related articles that may give you insight.
This is major surgery so you need to feel comfortable with your decision. Hug your mom, but do what you feel is best for your health.

Surgical menopause. Why would a doctor say this?
I agree with the previous posters. Your mother does have a legitimate concern, but you are a mature adult, making your own decision about your body, in conjunction with a qualified professional, and she needs to respect that. I had my surgery at age 48; I kept my ovaries because my surgeon and I agreed that the benefits of their continued hormone production still clearly outweighed the risks, and I had my Fallopian tubes removed, for reasons discussed above. I agree with April Dawn about acknowledging her concerns, and assuring her that you and your doctor will make the right decision for your individual situation. I would also recommend declaring the matter closed after that, then if she continues to pursue it, simply, say "I said the matter is closed," then either change the subject, walk away, or hang up the phone, and remember that it's her, not you, who's being rude. Just stick with us and your doctor, and you'll be sure to make the right decision. Best wishes for whatever you decide!

Surgical menopause. Why would a doctor say this?
Thank you all. She was fine with my decision until this doctor told her I would still go into menopause at the same time I normally would. She respects this guy. I just don't understand why he would say such a thing.
