Question after pre-op

Hi, Ladies! I just had my pre-op this morning and read on my information that I'm supposed to avoid garlic for 1 week prior to surgery. Does anyone know why this is?

Anyway, the appointment went well - I really love my doctor - with the exception of him informing me he will not even attempt a vaginal surgery on me. He feels it needs to be abdominal due to my fibroids being on the outside of my uterus (at least one is pedunculated) and he feels it is much safer to remove everything abdominally so as not to tangle with intestines and ureter. That makes sense to me...just a little more recovery time and that's okay.

AND he was excited when I asked him about seeing a picture of my uterus. I am just curious to see how big it looks with the fibroids. I've never been given an estimate, he just refers to my largest fibroid as "the rock of Gibraltor". So he said he'd take a picture of it with either a measuring tool or his hands beside it to show it's size.

Anyway, I'm now anxiously counting down to my big day and feeling less nervous since I KNOW more facts about my procedure!!!

Question after pre-op

I also had a fibroid that was pedunculated and a few inside. My doctor told me the same thing, that abdominal was the best and safest way. I was initially disappointed, but realized that I wanted her to be able to see what she needed and not have any complications during surgery that could be avoided. My uterus was about 14 weeks pg sized and the monster fibroid was the size of a tennis ball on the outside.

I got a picture of the whole thing, with a ruler next to it for scale. I kept my cervix so from the amputation point to the end of the monster fibroid it was about 6 inches long. May not sound like alot but I am very short and short waisted so it had very little room in there and was causing a lot of pressure on my other organs. Good to have it gone! The recovery has been uneventful. My only advice is to stay low and don't lift or strain yourself. Take your meds and let others help you while you heal. Good luck, you will be so happy when its over.

Question after pre-op

Tammy,
I think that garlic is a blood thinner. If you are taking any herbs or supplements, let the Dr. know. I almost took a supplement to keep from catching the cold and flu, and then found out that it was contra-indicated for persons having surgery. It was also a blood thinner.
I think if you look under resources you can find out more info.
Good luck,
Ronda
