View, Etc., My Trying

If we could get another program on The View--GO FOR IT! I'd be willing to write them--in fact, will add it to my to-do list for tonight. I sent Harpo Studios a letter with a card, brochure, and fact sheet from OCNA along with a two page letter. Did 40 letters locally a couple weeks ago--bigger places need to plan--one HMO may put an article in its newsletter to patients. I'm going to keep plugging.

Ovarian enters breast territory!!!!

Margaret,

I checked the website for The View. It is:

http://abc.abcnews.go.com/daytime/theview/index.html

The website has the capability of e-mailing Barbara Walters, who produces the show. I would suggest also sending a copy snail mail to make sure one or the other doesn't fall by the wayside.

I think presenting it as a gynecologic cancer show will make it more marketable because there is strength in numbers. I know the endometrial cancer incidence has surpassed 40,000, I believe ovarian is in the neighborhood of 25,000, and cervical cancer is approximately 12,000. So packaging it as a gynecologic cancer show would put the annual incidence over 75,000 which may make it more appealing when they are considering impact on their viewing audience.

Thanks for offering to write the letter. If we get a response and they want a gyn-onc as part of the package, I'll be happy to contact the gyn-oncs I've previously dealt with on the GCF Board.

Good Luck!

Barbara Walters--1998 GCF Award Recipient

I did a little more research and saw that Barbara Walters received the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation Public Service Award in 1998. According to the GCF website, the entire cast of The View also has done a public service announcement for the GCF, although I must admit I've never seen it! So apparently the show has a track record of focusing attention on gynecologic cancer. It's certainly worth a shot!

Here's the cite discussing the above two items:

I'll dash off an e-mail to Barbara as well--

I'm in too! I'll send a letter to The View ladies and/or Barbara ASAP, since I'm a cervix gal I'll try to represent!

P.S. Karenann, excellent work and congrats on getting a chance to educate more people.

I got my teal survivor's ovarian cancerT shirt from Phila NOCC's annual Whisper Walk last September. I was an advanced disease survivor speaker. This year our walk is Sept. 14th, and if there are any extras, I promise to snag one for you.

I wanted some way to bring attention to endometrial cancer - you guys are so great! I will start my writing letters tomorrow.
Karenanne - am going to try to get into Philly to see the booth! Where is the walk on 9/14? Where can I get information on it?

You are absolutely an inspiration!

It would be sooo cool to see you on Sunday. If you get to come, across from the famous art museum steps, numerous tables will be set up. On the map the Komen org. sent me, I will be at one of the tables in the front, or if you were standing on the art museum steps, look toward the right side of the front. I will have on a teal ovca survivor T shirt. I won't be hard to miss in a sea of pink!!! LOL.
The annual Whisper Walk takes place at Lloyd Hall on Kelly drive. Our three mile walk is down along boat house row. A beauty of a walk. Feel free to email me your snail address, and I'll make sure you get a brochure.
Hope your treatments are treating you gently.
