Pain management

I wish I had been along sooner to reply to this but here goes anyway.

I have one large prolapsed disc at L5-S1 - it happened 9 years ago next month when my first child was 4 months old. I have done the rounds of osteopathy, Physio, Hydrotherapy, Steroid epidurals, acupuncture, facet joint blocks, Botox injections, etc . Chiropractic treatment currently keeps me upright.

I also have associated facet joint disease and arthritis. I take Tramadol 50mg (Zydol) on which I am now dependent. (I was also prescribed nefopam which did absolutely NOTHING.)

Steroid epidural - having had an epidural with my first child I wasn't particularly apprehensive but I had already been in labour 24hrs by then........I will be honest and tell you that this time it wasn't a pleasant experience although I won't go into detail. The staff were marvellous however. Personally I did not gain any long term relief, it was only the one off injection- maybe I would have benefited from a series like you have planned.

Suffering from chronic pain is a *****, and that's being polite and if you're like me you'll try anything that comes your way. my pain management consultant said he was prepared to prescribe morphine if he felt it was appropriate but I haven't gone down that road.

My orthopaedic surgeon has given me the option of being referred to a specialist's specialist but I have opted to get my gyn problems out of the way first before contemplating that as it may involve surgery using a titanium insert to reassert the height between the vertebrae. After trying so much I am seriously thinking of it.

Sorry if it has sounded like I have answered your question with my own problems but I wanted to get it home that I really do understand your pain and I am there with you in whatever you decide to try and please email me if you want to talk prolapsed discs or anything else for that matter!

btw - I turned 36 last week but I feel more like 86!
