HIDA scan nightmare!!!

Well sisters, I had my HIDA scan for my gallbladder yesterday and it was a complete NIGHTMARE!!

I was suppost to fast (which I did) but they pushed my appt from 10am to 12pm and I was not only starving, but could not take any of my meds. My back was killing me and so was the pelvic cramping I STILL have. It took them 3 tries to get a vein for the dye because i was dehydrated and my veins were collapsed.

I layed there for an hour for the first part of the test while they watched the radioactive dye go through my liver to my gallbladder and it was supposed to be saved on the computer. WELL, guess what..... It did not save. They only got the last frame. Thankfully the radiologist said was enough just to make sure there was not a blockage.

Second step was to make me drink half and half and wait an hour before being scanned again. Well, I left the clinic and thought I was OK and I started burping up the half and half in my mouth and pain and burning under my right rib cage along with feeling like it was all going to come up at any minute. I made myself eat a little bit of a muffin because I thought it would help and it just made it all worse. I went back and had the rest of the scan done (only took about 10 minutes and had to drive 45 minutes to get home. I spent 5 hours in the clinic and I was so exhausted I could barely drive.

Ever since that test I have been burping up everything I eat and feel so bloated that it is uncomfortable to sit sometimes.

I also have more gas than the Exxon gas station..... Is this all normal? does the gas and burping and pain and bloating measn it is my gallbladder? Or could it be something else?

I go back to the GS and Uro on Monday but I am soooo SICK of belching stuff up it is driving me NUTS!!!!!

Thanks for being there dear sisters!!!!!!!!

HIDA scan nightmare!!!

Pam,
Sorry the test was sooo awful. I had a bad experience with a small bowel series. I ended up spending 5 hours at the clinic because the barium was not moving.

Are you sure the stuff was half and half? Maybe it was barium, looks like half and half, and that barium stuff always creates nightmares for me.

Perhaps you could try some gasx or something similiar. Have you tried plain saltine crackers? Or maybe some plain buttered toast? Some plain macaroni with butter on it? Those are things that used to work for me to settle things down. Warm 7-up also use to work for me.

If things get worse give the doctor a call. There is usually someone on call that may be able to give you some suggestions.

HIDA scan nightmare!!!

Hi Pam,

I can certainly relate to the collapsed veins. I have a lot of problems with that myself. I have to be at hospital 9:00AM Monday to start extensive bowel prep for what looks like at least for now a 2:30PM surgery on Tuesday. Seems extreme to me & I am hoping they start my IV before I am too dehydrated. Last fistula surgery I was NPO for 4 days then of course they brought me a big spicy dinner. Nice choice. I waited till I was home to eat soup.

Good Luck,
Terry

HIDA scan nightmare!!!

Thanks sisters!!

Kim,
I tries the GasX and it really did not help but the warm 7up settled the nauseousness a bit. Thanks for the tips. What they gave me was half in half and not barium. I saw the carton they poured it out of. I dont know why it made me so sick to my stomach though. Thanks again, your the BEST!!!

Terry,
I hope all goes well tomorrow and it goes smoothly for ya.. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!! Please keep us posted when you get home when you feel up to it..

HUGS!!!
