Biopsy

Hi,
I have been having periods every 2 weeks for the past 3 months. I went to my gyno on Friday and he says I am a little anemic and wants me to take a multivitamin and iron supplement. Then he scheduled me for a biopsy in his office in June. He is going to take a piece of tissue form my uterus and have it sent for biopsy to rule out endometrial cancer. He does not feel I have it but wants to make certain I do not. He said the results take a week. When I get the results he said, we will take things from there. I had the CA 125 bloodtest done a few months ago and it was negative but I am wondering how effective this blood test is for endometrial cancer. I have a fibroid bigger than an orange and multiple others and a cyst on my ovary which he says has not changed from the last ultrasound. I am nervous about all this and the procedure I am about to have. Gyno says for me to take 4 aleve before procedure to help with the cramping after. Can anyone comment to all this? Thanks.
Diane

Biopsy

Hi Diane,
So sorry you are having to go through all this anxiety, but I'm glad your doctor is being thorough and doing a biopsy. If it is anything, it is so important to catch it early.

I had an endometrial biopsy last September for post menopausal bleeding. It really was not bad. I took 800 mg Ibuprofin about 30 minutes before the procedure. A thin plastic catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterus, and endometrial tissue is removed by a slight suction. This causes some cramping, but the medication takes the edge off, and it is over in no time at all. There is a little spotting for a day or two, but no cramps.

I don't think the CA125 is considered acurate for detecting endometrial cancer, though I have read that fibroids will occasionally cause an abnormal reading.

Has your thyroid function been checked? I ask because I went through a time when I had periods every couple of weeks (very exhausting) and it was because my thyroid was out of whack.

Take care of yourself and just take things a step at a time. You can always come here if you need support. I pray that all will be well and the biopsy will be negative. s

Biopsy

Hi Diane....

I can certainly understand your being nervous and having had your period soo often can certainly make you anemic.

Here's hoping that everything turns out well.
