What exactly IS a bladder spasm?

OK, I have been on my cath since Fri, 5/23, and I absolutely hate those bladder relaxers.. I was told by my URO that I don't have to take them unless I have bladdre spasms.. what are they? Is it the urge to pee? What exactly are they? Somebody enlighten me..

What exactly IS a bladder spasm?

Hi Maddy,

You will know when you have a bladder spasms. I usually had them later in the afternoon or evening. My bladder would fill with air bubbles & was quite painful. Like shooting pains that went through my vagina. I always felt like my bladder was trying to drop through my vagina. I would then have to sit on the toliet lean forward & force air out of my bladder. I could tell by the bubbles forming in my catheter tube when they would start. I now take Ditropan & Imparine 2x a day plus my pain meds. Since my supra fell out I do not have the air bubbles but still feel like my vagina is raw & sore due to urine leaking out of my hole. It took a few different meds before we found the right ones. I was lucky that my urologist gave me samples to try first.

Good Luck,
Terry

Hi Terry

Thanks for replying so quickly. I am not sure if I had those. I am starting to feel some weird little pains and other things down there. I just found out that I have to keep the catch in till at least June 2, which is when they will do another dye test. UGH. I sure hope my bladder heals up before then.

What exactly IS a bladder spasm?

Hi Maddy,

The urethral catheter was much worse then the supra. I had a lot of irritation due to it. Don't be surprised if you do get spasms 'cause your bladder is just reacting to a foreign object in there. If your dr didn't prescribe any pain medication I would ask for some. It is better to have them on hand if you need them. I hope it heals on it's own but if it doesn't maybe they will be able to cauterize it or fix it vaginally. All week I kept hoping I would wake up & mine would be healed but no such luck. In fact I leak worse today then ever. I am changing my diaper about once an hour. Are you leaking any with the catheter? If you aren't that is a good sign.

Take care,
Terry

Hi Terry,

Wow, that must be awful! What is a supra cath? How is it different than the regular one like I have?

In my case the bladder spasms made it *feel* like I had to go to the bathroom all the time. Taking the Detrol reduced those so I was not as uncomfortable and I could get to sleep ... it's hard to go to sleep when you feel like you have to go to the bathroom.

Hi SBlumen

Oh I am glad you posted it. That's what I was thinking. I have been having a very strong urge to go to the bathroom, but when I do, nothing really happens.. It does tend to relieve that urge somewhat. I am also on some bladder relaxers (Oxybutynin).. I have only been taking them at night, though, except for today.. I took it around lunch time. The first time I took it it made me very nauseated.

What exactly IS a bladder spasm?

Hi Maddy,

A supra pubic catheter is surgically implanted in your bladder just above your pubic bone. Take your bladder meds because you don't want to strain yourself on the toliet. That would not be could for your fistula. Take care of yourself. You will probably be all healed before I am out of the hospital. Most fistulas of our type are fixed the first time & some without surgery.

Good Luck,
Terry

Hi Maddy,
I know what you mean about the bladder meds. I have been taking Detrol 4mg and it does make me feel sick and drowsy. I did read there was a 2mg strength.

I also can relate to the "having to go but nothing coming out".

I hope your bladder heals up quickly!

What exactly IS a bladder spasm?

Hi Maddy

How are you feeling?? a little better I hope!! Well for bladder spams(they do really s****)- I really think everyone is different- I am still having them right now as a matter of fact. and I am 10 + weeks post OP!! I overdid it the last couple of days- painting etc and am now paying for it- mine were always worse as Terry said at the end of the day- and by about 6PM I could not walk anymore- I took pain meds at night only- as during the day I needed and wanted to be sort of myself for my kids!!

So you will feel your way thru it- and I did not have any at all for about 2 weeks - it sometimes takes your bladder a while to get real aggravated and react to the cath- and it does depend on the cath placement to as to how much it will bother you. So hopefully yours will heal and you can get it out soon. I hope this helps and please let me know if you need anything else!!
