Can U recommend good, old scary/suspense movies?

Hi Marta,

Wasn't there another scary one with Betty Davis? Something like "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte"? Sorry to get everyone off the subject but I wasn't well supervised as a child.

I have to admit that "The Birds" left a major impact on me also.

YES, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, that was the other one! I think the roles were reversed in that one, and Joan Crawford was the evil one or something like that. And, The Birds, I will never forget that scene at the end when they are leaving the house and hundreds of birds are just watching them (creepy). I love all the Hitchcock movies and I read that AFI list and my favorite, "Psycho" is at the top of the list. Boy, this thread is bringing back memories! (I guess I wasn't well supervised either, lol)

The Great Tallulah

Okay, if we're talking that type of scary movie, there's always the great Tallulah menacing Stephanie Powers in Die, Die, My Darling!

With a very non John-Boy role for Richard Thomas!

Hi, does anybody remember "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn ? That one had me on the edge of my seat ! But there was nothing gory in it - just lots of suspense.
I do enjoy a good Bette Davis movie sometimes too. She sure could play a good old vile woman well.

Hi Again,

Do any of you remember the original "Frankenstein" movie in black & white? That had to be in the 60's and also did a number on me but then so did the Wizard of OZ (those flying monkeys)

Hi Ladies,

Yes, the old Frankenstein does stick in my memory, and the flying monkeys (and the wicked witch for that matter!), were scary to me. Jean, I never saw that Audrey Hepburn movie, but isn't is interesting that all of these movies mentioned had very little violence actually shown, yet were even more scary than anything in the movies today.

Marta, you hit exactly on why I wanted all of your suggestions.

I wanted the kids to see that they can have their hearts gripped without seeing tons of blood & gore, nudity (almost always female...) and violence against women made to seem sexy.

I know there's some violence & evil in most of these movies but it just isn't the same as what they watch today.

It has been fun reading everyone's responses & remembering all these creepy films!

Oh, and the flying monkies were chilling & even the talking trees in the forest scared me!

I'm not into getting scared anymore, but to each their own.
Our kids just love it! Of course, they love thrill rides too, but that's another story....

I agree with Jeanus, Wait Until Dark with Katherine Hepburn is great and very suspenseful. I'd like to add House of Wax with Vincent Price and Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman. I LOVE the movie The Ghost and Mrs.Muir, but I can't recall who is in it.

Don't Forget "Phantom of the Opera" with Lon Chaney!

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

That's a romantic one, not suspense. But it's one of my favorites.
