getting a cold before surgery

Two of my children had very bad colds and now I have a sore throat and feel like I'm getting sick. My surgery for a cystocele repair is next Wed. Will they cancel my surgery if I have a cold even if it is mild? Anyone have this happen to them?

I agree, call your DR... I was exposed to strep a week before my hyst, and my DR put me on preventative antibiotics as well (prevented the strep nicely, but I ended up getting yeast infections instead , so be sure to eat plenty of yogurt too).

I agree with the other sisters, you need to call your Dr NOW rather than waiting to see if you get full blown sick..

I got sick 4 days before my first lap and they had to reschedule it. I hope they can catch whatever you have and be able to press on with your surgery... Will keep you in my prayers!!

((((berg)))) I'm sorry you're ending up fighting a cold, just before your surgery

I agree with the others that you should give your doctor a call. If the cold is mild, they might not cancel the surgery. Still, they'll likely want you to use antibiotics, just to be on the safe side.

Do take care of yourself and rest in order to allow your body to fight this.

Sending tons of s your way. Hopefully, you'll feel better soon.

Call your doc

Good idea to call your doctor. S/he should know any health concerns previous to surgery. It was my experience some years ago just before a surgery that as long as I was not running a termperature, surgery was a "go".

Thanks for your replies. I went for my preadmission visit today and they checked my temperature and bloodpressure, lungs etc. and everything is fine so far. As long as my symptoms keep mild I think I'll be alright. I can understand they don't want patients to be coughing while healing from sutures. Will tell you how it all goes after the 18th.

Hi Berg, I'm relieved that all went well at your pre-op

While coughing while recovering from abdominal surgery certainly is a concern, the main concern, with a cold, is the risk of infection should the cold be in your chest and lungs. Also, the fever could indicate that you're already are fighting an infection and bring a hightened risk of complications.

Wishing you the best of luck for your surgery and hoping that you escaped the cold.
