Relay For Life

I went to my 1st local ACS Relay For Life Fri night thru Sat morn. I felt so proud and so humble.

My old college roomate who finished chemo for breast ca last Dec was there. Her mother has kidney ca and was too weak to come. We did the survivors lap together (with my sister a 8 year breast cancer survivor) and when the crowd applauded, I cried. I never saw so much support in one place.

We also got Tshirts, free supper, and many merchant gifts. The weather was perfect and we stayed for the lighting of the luminaries. The luminaries honored those that have lost the fight. All together there were over 200 survivors who marched but also over 500 luminaries were purchased.

I only wished we could have gotted better press coverage for this event. The public needs to be aware just how much cancer is in each community.

Relay For Life

Ruth:

I went to my local Relay For Life event last weekend. Wasn't that an incredible feeling to walk in the survivor lap? I cried the whole way as I walked holding my husband's hand. I felt so loved!

It was very windy for our luminary ceremony. Several bags caught fire, so they had to put out the rest. It was beautiful when they were all lit, though.

We didn't have any press coverage...it's definitely needed.

It was certainly an occasion that I will never forget.

Relay For Life

I am involved with our local Relay for Life. I have not had cancer but my employer is a big benefactor for Relay for Life and we have a group every year that walks and sets up a camp. Our small town really turns out and it is social event too. It is a wonderful time and the luminary ceremony is always so touching. I am so happy to be a part of this every year.

These events sound sooo inspiring. Nothing like being in great company.
And we know cancer survivors are just the best.
I am surprised the ACS doesn not have better media coverage at these Relays. Perhaps this is an area where we should all get more involved next year.
