Severe & Sudden Vaginal "Shooting" Pain w/ abd.leftside

Hi all, I had my abd. hyster in Oct.2000 and I had a tough time w/ pain. But then suddenly everything healed until i gained weight and now for the last 8-10 months I have had sever abd. pain on lower left side, few inches above incison scar.I have had 3 large incisions in the same place and its a mess.
I also had a prolapsed Uterus and sever endo so everything was removed and I had endo w/ cysts galore.Anyhoo, I now have this chronic pain and so far between my MD and my PA Gyno Asst. I have heard 2x between them it could be an incisional hernia, but they dont feel anything,no lumps or any reason to think hernia, but the pain they said is that of similar reaction to hernia. So, I see a surgeon on wed. and i feel weird because shouldnt I be seeing a gyno?

This is a surgeon of general practice or something..He is just that, a surgeon.I always see specific dr's for specific area's.Is this unusual?

I should keep this appt. on wed,but I think I will ask him if I should see the Gyno.surgeon as well that did my Hyster 2.5 years ago? Maybe he will just send me back and get the gynos opinion.
I dont know. All I know, is I am sick of all of this female pain and on top of it there is nothing in there,no cervix, nothing, and now this awful pain that is getting worse with time..I also could have endo, or adhesions,or all of the above, right?

Why didnt they mention that? I am so tired and just feeling so awful because I also have 4 kidneystones that wont get are my hormones in an uproar or what? I just think I am completely burned out.

This is gonna be my 9th operation total(between stones and female stuff), possibly my 2nd exploratory if they just dont know.I have been rambling,so I'll pray someone read all this...=)God Bless my Sisters, in Gods hands I trust........God help me...and anyone else that wants to,always,Ancilee Kaye

Ancilee Kaye............

Love your name by the way.............very unique and my sister and my daughters middle names are Kaye, so dear to my heart.

Gee, I've responded to so many posts tonight, unusual for me, but for once I feel like I actually have something to offer.

I tend to agree with your Dr's on their diagnosis of an incisional hernia. I had my hyst in June of 2002 for left lower abdominal pain that was steadily increasing and after my hyst it didnt go away and in fact continued to get worse. I changed to a new OB/GYN (after much searching) and he thought that my problem might be a hernia so he sent me to a general surgeon. I too felt like I was in the wrong place. I had no outward signs of a hernia, only the symptoms. I also had a large ovarian cyst (that wasnt there prior so WASN"T my original source of pain) that HAD to be removed so my GYN and the general surgeon scheduled my surgery so they could both be there and the surgeon could fix the hernia if one was found. During my surgery it was found that my hernia was HUGE although there were absolutely NO outward signs that I had a hernia at all!!! Only symptoms and my gyn suspected that had been the source of my left abdominal pain all along and the cyst was only a complication of my hysterectomy.

Sorry for the long story but what I am trying to say is don't sweep the hernia theory under the rug. Hernias can cause alot of damage if left unrepaired including damage to your bowels, I had severe diarrhea so bad that I couldnt even leave my house at times. and pain that increases with time is one of the symptoms of a hernia so I think that your Dr's are on the right track. Also........Keep in mind that hernias like this are VERY hard to diagnose in women so even if this surgeon says "he doesnt THINK it's a hernia"...still don't sweep this theory under the rug because the hernia specialist that I went to (the general surgeon who attended my surgery) also said he didn't THINK I had a hernia. Sometimes it DOES require an actual visual inspection to find them in women (exploratory). My new Gyn is a DO ( Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) I've never been into the holisitic approach to medicine and I'm stil not but these D.O's, Ive found DO look at the body as a whole instead of pieces and parts. My Gyn told me that in women (I dont remember the exact #) approximately 80% (?) of womens hernias are diagnosed incidentally, meaning they are only found when they are already inside the body doing work on something else. Is this because they miscount our pain or because we handle it better??? Who knows?

Gee....I've really written a novel here haven't I ???? Don't feel bad about whining. I whined on this board for 6 months before I was properly diagnosed and had my 2nd surgery and then my 3rd surgery and sometimes I still whine. There are wonderful women here who understand where you are coming from and truly care. You've sure had your share of surgeries..I hope they get you fixed up this time. I'll keep you in my prayers. Feel free to e-mail or PM me anytime.

Severe & Sudden Vaginal "Shooting" Pain w/ abd.leftside

I think your comment about "everything healed until I gained weight" might also be a clue to the hernia possibility.

Several years ago I went to see a Pelvic Pain Specialist... he told me that one thing he finds frequently with the conscious pain mapping he does is undiagnosed hernias causing chronic pelvic pain. So it is definately worth checking out.

I hope you find an answer and a successful outcome.

I agree with Dawn in not dismissing the hernia theory until they rule it out.

I too was sent to a General Surgeon for what I thought was female problems and they turned out to be just that... female probs. It was severe adhesions that had to be taken care of by my Gyn.

Let them steer you in the right directions, but it sounds like you have some good drs.. Let us know what they find out!!

Good luck and I will keep you in my prayers!!

Shooting Pains

I understand how you feel about not knowing exactly which doctor to go to. I had my TAH/BSO on 1/17. Three and a half weeks out I knew I had an adhesion on the lower left side because of the pulling and tugging. It also hurt a lot but my gyno said to waid for a few months to see if it subsided before we decided to do a laparoscopic surgery. In the meantime, I have dealt with pain off and on - - some days it's like I don't feel it. Others it is really uncomfortable. In any event I know I've probably got other adhesions too. I was actually thinking I might need to go to a general surgeon, though, which is just the opposite of what you're asking. The fact that I don't have any female organs any more makes me think I should at least get an opinion from a general surgeon. How I've chosen to handle this is to go to him for a 2nd opinion consult and then go to my gyno and determine what to do then. Either way, it's surgery again and even if it's laparoscopic it scares me to death!!! I just want to be past all of this.

Severe & Sudden Vaginal "Shooting" Pain w/ abd.leftside

To all my Sisters,

Thank you all for helping me feel abit more secure about all this.I guess I am just scared once again and I am really bloated, tired all the time and second guessing every move I make(physically, mentally),

Is that normal to be physically tired from a hernia?I feel like Im lugging around something because I am looking about 6 mo.'s pregnant and I am defiately retaining fluids.Feels like the bottom will drop out...yeah know??

Heres some more questions.....=(
1)If I was bleeding internally how would I know?

2)How would they know?

3)Can a hernia make you bleed internally?

Ok, atleast I am virtually laughing in between my 20 questions...hehehe...ouch,,haha..wahhhhhhh!!!
Anyhow the longer I sit straight up at this PC I get more bloated and start hurting.

Anyhow, I am on 20mg Oxycontin 2x a day=slow release morphine and also Vicadin for the backup/breakthrough pain relief, for reoccuring, genetic dysfunction,Cystine Kidneystones.
But, I am finding this large area of pain in my abdomen is so sharp that I still am not getting my pain levels down enough.I hate to whine to dr. But I may have to ask to increase something for awhile till I get through all this. What do you all think? I am taking alot now,but I am hurting like hella.Oh well, life goes on and I just wanna have FUN<dammmit....boohooo...summertime is ruined now....wahhhhhhhh!!!!
