And The New Number Is......

s Rosalie

I am glad your ca 125 dropped back down some. I hope the downward trend continues. But if not, you may seriously want to request a PET scan.
You are in my prayers.

More on CA-125(II)

Rosalie,

Good news about the decreasing number; I got curious and pulled out all my CA-125 results (it sure beats cleaning the house) and the interesting thing is the first three which were all below 10 (9, 9, and 8 in that order) were listed only as "CA 125" on the lab reports. Then I had two in April and Oct. 2001 and both were 14--almost double the 8. Both of the 14's are listed as CA-125(II).

I did a little research and found the following information that discusses the fact that the CA-125 is no longer manufactured in the U.S. It also said that a lot of doctors and patients don't know what test is being used and that it is important to know because the results can be somewhat higher or lower with the second generation test or CA-125(II). The article (actually in Q & A format) also discusses the potential variability in the test results. Here's the site:

I hope your results turn out to be either from your mushroom supplements, test variability, or other equally insignificant factors.

Rosalie, I am so glad to hear that your CA125 number is going down. That is definitely in the right direction! The business with the mushrooms is fascinating. I will be interested to hear more about that.

Jane.

And The New Number Is......

Hi Moekay..

thank you for the information. IT was rather interesting. My oncologist still says that she does not know anything about ca125 II but I am going to ask to see a copy of my results so that I can look at it myself.

glad

Rosalie, I'm happy to hear that your number is down. The CA 125 is a tough thing. I had asked my doctor about my being so high (69.3) and she said it was probably due to my surgery. It's funny that so many things can effect it and difficult for us who worry about our numbers elevating. Hopefully, a more reliable test will be developed put our minds at ease.

I am sure that your CA 125 number will continue to drop.

Re: the CA 125 test - as MoeKay mentioned, it is no longer manufactured (in The States), and it's important to know if the original or 2nd generation test is being used, to interpret the results. From my quick research, the CA125 (II) first appeared in 1996 - (if my memory serves me well).

All the best to you, Rosalie.
