Op gone wrong??

My mum had her radical (total) hysterectomy 4 years ago now and is still suffering the after effects. Apart from symptoms of the menopause such as hot sweats she suffers from a multitude of problems.

She is not the same anymore, her confidence is shattered, she has lost lots of weight (although she thinks she is fat), she hates herself, her memory and lack of concentration fail her at work and at home, she takes sleeping pills to make her sleep at night and pills in a morning to keep her awake and help her concentrate during the day. She has lost some of her hair, it has changed in texture, she feels ugly and has lost interest in herself, and others.

I could go on and on forever detailing the pain this operation has caused her and whats more is she didn't receive any advice or information regarding a radical hysterectomy before hand and was not diagnosed with cancer, her reasons for the op were for heavy periods.

After explaining her case time and time over to her G.P and surgeon, they all say the same thing.....try another H.R.T. She has treid several but none seem to help her anymore than the last one!

She is screaming out to be heard but no one seems to be listening, just prescribing more drugs for depression. I CAN hear her and am desperate to help but I dont know what to do, can someone PLEASE help me.

Op gone wrong??

I had my hysterectomy 4 years ago. I have many menopausal symptoms also, but I *can't* take HRT for medical reasons. To help relieve hot flashes, my doctor prescribed Effexor, which is a mild antidepressant. I still get hot flashes, but since taking Effexor, they are less frequent and less severe.

I still deal with my foggy brain, sometimes forgetting what I'm saying in mid-sentence. Insomnia was a problem, but for some reason since I've been taking Effexor, I fall asleep much faster and sleep better, probably because the hot flashes don't keep me awake.

Perhaps you could post in the Hormone Jungle. There may be other ladies with similar problems who have been helped by HRT. It's not always that a certain form of HRT *doesn't work*, it's that it needs to be adjusted or used in conjunction with something else.

I hope you can find some suggestions here for your Mother. Four years is much too long to feel so poorly.
