Is folic acid and folate the same thing?

I'm still trying to figure these vitamins out!!

Good question, Transplant! I was confused by this for a long time. And the answer is yes, and yet, no.

Folate is a naturally occurring substance found in green leafy vegetables. Folic acid is the synthetic equivalent and is added to some breads and grains. The chemical structure of folic acid is more simple than that of folate, so it is absorbed by the body more easily, but once both are digested and absorbed, they work the same way and offer the same benefits.
