Folic acid to prevent displasia

Does anyone know about this? It was mentioned in another thread today. Is there any evidence to support this - that high doses of folic acid can help prevent displasia? Thanks Debby

Folic acid to prevent displasia

Hi, Debby!

There has been some research that has shown that folic acid may help fight off HPV which causes dysplasia. The way I understand it (my interpretations of the theory) is that if a woman does not have enough folic acid in her system that it can cause a weakness in her DNA. HPV seeks out that weakness and "writes" itself into the DNA. A folic acid supplement for these women may keep the DNA from developing the weakness that allows the HPV to take over.

That being said, a high dose of anything is not recommended unless prescribed by your physician. The FDA recommends a daily supplement of 400 micrograms (mcg). I have read that in therapeutic situations that 800 mcg would be appropriate. This is certainly a conversation to have with your doctor. I take the 400 mcg per day and then try to remind myself to get plenty of folate (folic acid is a synthetic version of folate) through my regular diet.

Good luck, Debby!

Folic acid to prevent displasia

Thanks so much Jeanine. Since your comment on another thread and since your reply to this I've been reading up about it on the www and there seems to be a lot of evidence that low folic acid is linked to cervical dysplasia and I'm certainly going to supplement my diet to try to prevent any reoccurrence. Huge thank you. Debs
