I am getting sicker and sicker....meeting with surgeon on Thurs.

Hello everyone!

Just a quick update here.....I am meeting with a surgeon on Thursday. At first when my GI doctor referred me to a surgeon, I basically agreed to go just to get a second opinion on whether or not I need surgery for my severe gerd symptoms. I had no intention of having surgery. I was going to try medication after medication to see if anything would help me. Nothing has yet, but I was holding out hope that there would be something out there for me.

Well, I feel worse everyday. I have lost 10 pounds in the last 2 weeks and by the way things look, I will be losing alot more if this doesn't get under control.

Example of how bad it is.....the last time I ate was yesterday at about 4:30. I came home from work at about 7:15 and was starving, but didn't dare eat because I knew I would be awake all night feeling sick. See, at night, I feel food/acid coming up all night long. I dream about throwing up because I am so sick to my stomach that I WANT to throw up to feel better. So, this morning I scrammbled 2 eggs and put a little grated cheese on them. Keep in mind, it has been 15 hours since I last ate. I took 3 bites of my eggs and a few sips of water and it all came right back up! I can hardly eat anything. I am so sick all the time. I am thirsty all the time because if I drink...same thing, it comes right back up! It is getting worse and worse all the time and it is starting to worry me.

I have made drastic changes to my diet and as I said am losing weight and I am no longer considered overweight, although losing another 10 pounds wouldn't hurt, I shouldn't lose anymore than that.

I am getting worried about this. I was dealing with minor symptoms of acid reflux for 2 years, but then started getting bad at Christmas time and it slowly got worse over the 4-5 months after Christmas. I have been going down hill very quickly since.

I guess I needed someone to talk to about this. I'm stressed out and very, very sick. I have decided that I am going through with the surgery to hopefully correct this problem....unless the surgeon has some magic cure that I am unaware of!

Wish me luck!

(((((((pasdechat))))))))))))) I'm so sorry you've been sooooo sick

(((((Sweetie)))))) I agree that it looks like the time has come to do something about this severe GERD. You can't keep loosing weight like this!!!! Rapid weight-loss, such as this, is not healthy and could lead to other problems... such as dehydration, bone loss and muscle mass loss. Is there any chance that your appointment with the surgeon can be advanced? Considering how sick you've been and that you can't eat, Thursday sounds like a looooooong way off.

Sending tons of s your way. Please keep us posted.

I am getting sicker and sicker....meeting with surgeon on Thurs.

Hi Dany! Thanks for saying exactly what I needed to hear! I need support about my decision to have surgery. Thursday seems like it can't get here soon enough, but I am going to try to hold out for that day....it's only the day after tomorrow. Most likely I wouldn't be able to bump my appointment up, but I guess I won't know until I try! As much as I wanted to lose weight, I am worried about my health and just want to get better so I can eat healthier.

Thanks again for the support. It means alot to me

I know how hard it is to feel sick like that. I was never the same after my IVP and had thrush but wasn't treated for it for so long I couldn't eat. My mouth would break out in hives and sores no matter what I ate. I kept losing weight too. Ten days after my fistula repair I started vomiting bile every 20 min. I Knew I needed IV fluids. I was down to 101 pounds.....I was taken by ambulance and hydrated and given another medicine for stomach problems doctor said related to stress...

MY point is....don't get too thin and sick....get help now.

I'm worried about you.

Renee and Kim, thanks for your support too. I agree that I need to get help now before I get more sick and too thin. That's why I am going to have the surgery. I just want to feel better. I am starving right now because I haven't eaten for several hours, but it's 9:00pm and if I eat, I will regret it.....even one bite! I have been sipping water and I still feel the esophageal spasms and the acid reflux.

I hate this and I am really scared about the whole situation.

Thanks again to all of you. I really need some friends right now!

I can imagine your desperation, sweetie! . I'm very glad the surgeon can get you in soon...especially if the gall bladder is also involved, the consequences of waiting too long, as (((Renee))) points out, can be nasty.

I've had that feeling and know it well...with me it turned out to be severe, nearly perforated ulcers. I've paid a price over the years for letting it go too long. Hopefully, this will also help with the asthma you've mentioned!

Have you had any labs, to check pancreatic and liver enzymes? If not, make sure that your surgeon gets those levels too, and is working with your gastro on all this., so that they address the entire system, rather than just one small part.

Whatever you wind up needing, you know we're here for you...and frankly, I think many of us would welcome knowing that there was an answer for that refractory GERD that so many of us seem to experience (what you wanna bet that it's related to endo???? ).

Best of luck on that surgeon appointment, and I hope you get one of those -- they're out there -- that's interested in the whole person, who wants to be able to teach ballet and get her RN and raise her children. And who can give you an answer and a solution (whatever it is) to this misery.

, and I know you'll keep us posted...

(((((pasdechat)))))) I know you're scared ((((sweetie))))) and I also know you're sick, and that can make things even harder (our tolerance seems to go down when we're not feeling good).

I just wanted to chime in that it's important to get this attended to, ASAP. Audrey brings up a good point to get everything tested and to have your surgeon work closely with your other specialists, to be sure that everything is covered. My dad at one point had a really bad sore throat. It was after have a benign tumor removed and being too hasty in having all of the tubings removed (he hated hospitals and always wanted to get out the minute he would wake up from surgery )

For months, he couldn't eat, because everything would have an awful taste. Dr's were stumped: they ran all kinds of test, couldn't figure out what was wrong. He got to the point where he was loosing 1 lb a day over several months, going from "pleasantly plump" to severally underweight.

It turned out that his throat was severally raw and damaged from the surgery and not obeying post-op orders and that infection had settled in there (hence the awful taste). A few rounds of antibiotics later, along with a bland, soft diet, he started to eat normally again and got back to a heathy weight in no time at all. However, this rapid weight loss did get a toll on his body and severally reduced his immune system.

I'm not trying to scare you, just saying how serious this can get.

Well, tomorrow's almost here: hang in there!!! Hopefully, the surgeon will be able to offer a viable alternative for you. And, whatever turns out to be best for you (be it meds or surgery) your sisters will always be here for you.

Oh I feel so bad for you- but as all the other Ladies have said- PLEASE watch yourself... perhaps you might need some IV fluids to keep you going until tomorrow- I would not fool around if you don't feel well- get to the ER for some treatment... I am very worried about you and hope this new treatment/surgery will help.

As for DH- there really is nothing to say except you can only do your best at this point...sometimes you just want to run and hide- at least I feel that way...well sending a big and hope you feel better soon!!!

Thinking of ya sis

Another thought....been thinking of you. I'm scared that they may not do the surgery if your're too weak or dehydrated. Maybe a day of IV fluids would be good. Call your doctor and explain your eating problems and stomach problems.....maybe they can help you TODAY.
