I am getting sicker and sicker....meeting with surgeon on Thurs.

I hope everything goes well with the new doctor.

Did they ever mention other types of problems with your eosophagus? I just mention this because a friend of my mom's has had terrible trouble with her eosophagus. I will have to write and ask her the name. It is a problem where the eosphagus and sphincter at the top of the stomach is in spasm all the time and so food gets stuck in the eosophagus and take along time to enter the stomach. It took along time for her to get diagnosed correctly and she just recently had surgery at the Mayo clinic to try to resolve it... apparently a very specialized surgery where they cut the sphincter and then wrap part of the stomach around it to make a new one. She had tried Botox injections to loosen up the muscles/sphincter but they didn't help much.

I just mention this because you keep describing food getting stuck before it even gets to your stomach. That has been her biggest symptom. She lost so much weight that she is on some sort of ju-something feeding tube.

SBlumen...yes, food does get stuck on the way down. I have been having esophageal spasms for 7 months now! It started at Christmas time....well, actually it started 2 1/2 years ago, but it went away for a while and now it is worse than ever. I am having less spasms, I think because I'm hardly eating. When I eat more, I have more spasms. Anyway, I am feeling a little worse everyday and I feel like things have changed since my endoscopy a month and a half ago. When I had my endoscopy, the doctor said that it was normal except for a hiatal hernia. My manometry test showed that I have a significant amount of acid coming up. I didn't know enough about this to ask many questions, but I have lots of questions for the surgeon. I want him to give me more details about all my test results. Since my symptoms are soooooo much worse than when I had my endoscopy, I have to really wonder what's going on now. I am ready to give up on food right now. If it wasn't for the horrible headaches I get when I don't eat enough food, I probably would be eating alot less!

Well, the morning is draaaaaaging by and I can't wait for 1:30 to get here so I leave for the doctor!

It's called Achalasia

Hi Pasdechat,
The problem my friend's mom has/had is called Achalasia. It is a condition in which the esophagus and sphincter fail to relax to permit food to enter the stomach. It caused her difficulty swallowing, eating, regurgitation and pain. She figured it out by researching on the internet when her regular doctor couldn't figure it out. Then she went to a specialist. She just had ther surgery 5 weeks ago and is able to eat better now but her stomach hasn't had to work for 2 years so the doc told her it is in a catabolic state. She has lost alot of weight and bone density.

Anyway, it is just an idea to ask the surgeon... now youhave the name of it.

Best of luck.

I forgot to mention that the antacid and GERD type drugs were not helpful for her....
