Complication from Toradol

I am almost 4 wks post-op and wanted to share my experience so that some of you may avoid the complications I had.

I had a TAH/BSO on 6/24/03, surgery went very well. The problem I had was a reaction to the pain med Toradol they gave me. This med can thin the blood of some people(I found out later) Shortly after being returned to my room after surgery I started to bleed from my incision. At that time did not seem like a huge concern, but I continued to bleed for over 12 hours and was having 101.5 temps. I became so weak I could barely talk. They finally took blood count and found it was only 16.4 and should be 40. They immediatly gave me 2 units of blood. My Dr. explained that the Toradol had thinned my blood and was not allowing some of the blood vessels they had cauterized to seal completely, essentially bleeding internally. I formed a huge hematoma from my belly button to my rear end(black and blue everywhere).

I was then told that if my count did not stay I would have to undergo another surgery to go in and fix where I had sprung a leak.

I did not have to undergo another surgery, but what should have been a 2 day stay in the Castle turned into a week.
A few days after being released I formed a blood clot where my uterus used to be, so I have been bleeding vaginaly for 2 wks now, it has slowed and is almost stopped.

Even with all the complications I was in less pain almost immediatly after surgery than I was pre-op and am getting stronger everyday.

I hope this info may be helpful, thank you for letting me share.
Lisa
