Anyone have pelvic repair?
My recovery seems to be going slower than what I've seen mentioned on this board, & am wondering if it's because I had pelvic repair in addition to TAH.
I am almost 5 weeks post-op (I thought I was almost 6 weeks but just counted & realized I've been wrong for a week!). Had something called "Total Pelvic Mesh Repair," to repair prolapse. Symptoms of the prolapse included fecal incontinence, among other embarassing stuff. A mesh sling was inserted to lift the pelvic organs, & was attached to my lower vertabrae & pelvic bones.
The TAH was strongly recommended because, should my uterus need to be removed in the future, the surgery would have been extremely complicated. They left my ovaries, however.
My gastrointestinal system is still not functioning properly, my lower back hurts almost all the time, I tire easily, & I'm scared to go back to work (unless they move my computer into the ladies restroom, provide a recliner, & excuse me from all meetings). My pelvic area also hurts after only about 1-2 hours of activity.
Anyone else have a similar surgery? If so, how are you doing??

Anyone have pelvic repair?
Nancy-
I hope you find someone who had the same pelvic repair that you did so you can feel some normalcy in your recovery. You had a HUGE operation in addition to your hysterectomy. And only you know your body, only you know if you can go back to work. And if you can't, fight for some more time off to let your body heal correctly.

Anyone have pelvic repair?
Nancydata,
12 years ago i had repair done for fecal incontinence due to childbirth tears. (Vaginal fistula) It was a good couple of months for recovery and i was 31 years old at the time and in good health. I also had my sphincter muscle repaired which really was a waste of time. I still suffer some problems unfortunatly. I would think your surgery was a little more extensive so it would take longer to bounce back. I was scheduled for a Tah in Aug. but due to a vacation to Europe in Sept. i knew it would not be enough time for recovery. I am now wondering from my previous surgery if it will have any bearing on a hysterectomy. I now want to discuss this with my doctor.

Anyone have pelvic repair?
Thank you for your replies, jen1234 & kac1960!
kac1960 -- Sounds like you had the same kind of childbirth experience I had with my first ds, nearly 14 years ago. My 3rd ds (6 yrs ago), just "added insult to injury." 2nd ds was small, thankfully!
Did you have improvement right after your pelvic repair, or did you also have to go to physical therapy? I'm concerned because I *still* cannot hold in gas, & have to wear a Depend at nite. Dr says he sees improvement in my muscle tone, but I'm afraid I'll still have to wear Depends to work. Dr has discussed the possibility of giving me an artificial anal sphincter (he's done this with 4 of his patients), but I would really like to avoid this. Having trouble remaining patient & positive. Especially since I can't seem to find others that have had the same type of repair (except you!).
I will be asking dr for additional time off. Problem is, there's a class I'm supposed to attend (all day, 5 days) on 8/11, so they want/need me back then. Don't know if I can handle sitting up all day. This is very frustrating (I'm also in pain right now from doing too much).

Anyone have pelvic repair?
Nancydata,
I know there are more of us like us out there- maby not on this site! My second and final ( child)16 years ago did more damage ( damaged on the 1st but not any problems) control that was the icing on the cake. A few months after i had her i noticed my "gas" was going through the vagina. I put up with that for three years and knew the sphincter was also damage. My o.b.g.yn denied anything was wrong of course. A whole another story to the reasons why i think it happened. My improvment was the fistual repair, not the sphincter repair. Its been 12 or 13 years and i have just learned to live with it. Makes for some pretty embarrising moments in my life!!! I hate it but never seemed to have the energy to deal with seeking out a doctor and maby seeing if something can be improved. A year after my surgery my doctor told me its as good as it gets. I would be interested in the information you recieve about the artificial sphincter.I have been told to have a hysterectomy due to fibroids but have put it off for now. I am wondering if this will affect any internal repairs i had years ago. This new Doctor does not quit grasp the severity of that paticular surgery i had. Do you have to wear Depends because of the healing of the surgery or was this even before? I have had some close accidents but not to that point .Well i know it is an awfull thing to be dealt with for just having kids.I have read alot about it and there is a Doctor in Canada on the web ( pelvic floor.com?) who is an advocate for choices of C- sections for pelvic floor disorders never happening to begin with. I feel your pain NancyData

Anyone have pelvic repair?
Hi kac1960,
Before my surgery, I had to wear Depends because I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) & frequently get diarhea. I cannot hold it in. I finally went to see the dr (& also started wearing Depends) shortly after going out to lunch with a friend (a man) who was in a class I was taking, and having an "accident." It took me awhile to clean up in the restroom, & I was shaking from the incident. Fortunately, I was having my period & the pad I was wearing helped -- but not totally. I was also wearing a long sweater that day. I don't think he ever suspected anything, but I probably looked like I had seen a ghost in the restroom! But, I had to return to work -- & fortunately had some spare underwear in my gym bag, so I made it thru the rest of the day. I almost had accidents while in meetings, as well (again, diarhea).
The surgery is supposed to correct that. However, the "system" is not working correctly. During the day, I feel constipated, & have difficulty evacuating. At nite (while sleeping), things just start to come out on their own. So, now I'm wearing a Depends at night, and a Poise pad during the day. The gas is horrible, & I cannot hold it in for anything. Will be seeing the dr next week, & am hoping that he will just say "this is normal; it will take time." Haven't had diarhea lately, but doubt I can hold it in yet. Dr did indicate that the muscle tone looks better though.
Interesting about the dr in Canada. I'll check out the site. I should have had c-sections. It was the labor nurse who absolutely insisted that I would *not* have a c-section with my first ds. The c-section would have been so much easier on both me & my ds.
May I PM (personal msg) you with the info regarding the artificial sphincter? I could tell you the dr I'm seeing (don't really want to post this for the world to see).

Private Messaging (PM)
Hi kac1960,
Don't want you to post me your email address, because then everyone in the world can see it. But we can exchange email addresses privately via Private Messages (safer).
I noticed that you are not set up for Private Messages, so I can’t “PM” you yet. You need to turn private messaging on by clicking on “Control Panel,” then clicking on the “Edit Options” option. Then scroll down until you see “Enable Private Messaging?” & click on “yes.” I also highly recommend clicking “yes” on the next option as well, so that you receive an email notification when someone PMs you. Finally, make sure you scroll to the bottom of the page & click on the “Submit Modifications” button. Then, I think you’ll have to maybe post another message (not sure) in order for the “PM” to show up by your user name, so that I can PM you.
Hope this makes sense. It’s past my bedtime & I’m not thinking clearly! Perhaps one of the moderators will see this message & point you to some better instructions. If you have trouble, send another post, or PM me by clicking on the “PM” link below my user name (left side of screen), underneath where it says “Send me greetings!” I would love to correspond with you, so please let me know if you need more help with this (when I’m at work, I’m a computer programmer…).
