TAH (Total Abdominal Hysterectomy)

Hi Missy38,
My Aunt is doing very well... thank you for asking.

Placenta acreta is where the placenta grows through the muscle wall of the uterus. It is a very dangerous complication of pregnancy and not something that you or the doctor have any control over. They think it happened to my Aunt because the placenta was over her old c-section scar and was also previa... I guess it happens more when you have previa too. My Aunt was in the hospital for the last 3 months of her prgnancy due to the placenta previa bleeding off and on.... she had ultrasounds every few days to check the baby and the placenta and they were not able to detect the fact she had acreta also.... this is apparently not unusual. She was in the hands of some of the best OBs in Minneapolis, MN. I can understand how traumatic this was for you... everyone in my family was traumatized by it.... but I just mention this because the placenta acreta is not something a doctor causes to happen, it is just the way the placenta grows... and when it does happen it can result in tremendous blood loss for the mother at delivery and the doctors have to act quickly to take care of it... and have the outcome of healthy baby and healthy mom.

I had two traumatic births also (also related to the placenta). In my case I had two placental abruptions. In the first case it was my second pregnancy. I went into pre-term labor at 7 months. I was in the hospital for a week before things finally "let loose" and they had to deliver the baby by emergency c-sectioin. They were not able to detect the abruption before the fact with ultrasound BUT when the doctor delvered him there was a large grapefruit size blood clot between the placenta and the uterus. It was terribly painful. I am so thankful the baby made it and so did I... abruption is the most dangerous thing for the baby and causes the baby to die before delivery if there is no intervention. I was fortunate not to have alot of bleeding after the fact but did have severe anemia. Fortunately the second time it happened I was 8 1/2 months pregnant so the baby was ready... that time the baby was in severe distress before delivery but everything turned out fine again.... I am so fortunate that in both cases, both little boys were born healthy and the premie is now even the tallest in his 3rd grade class.

I hope you are able to continue to recover from your hyst, and your traumatic experience, and find out why you are having pain now.

Sblumen
