CA125/CT Scan vs PET

First question: What is a CA125? What is it used for and what does it detect.
Second: I am scheduled for a whole body CT scan Monday morning, supposedly to see if the doc can find any evidence of spread before I start my chemo and radiation. Should I insist on a PET scan instead?
Thank you everyone for your information.

CA125/CT Scan vs PET

s Polly

A ca 125 is a blood test that is sometimes used to screen for possible ovarian cancer. It is often used as a tumor marker for people already diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
As a screening tool there are many conditions which could cause a false positive. As a tumor marker it can work well, if your ca 125 was high before surgery and dropped very low after surgery and chemo is completed. If it elevates then, it can be a sign of a recurrence. But all in all, it is far from a perfect test.
A women who has never had ovarian cancer wants a ca 125 of 35 or less.
At this point in your care a CAT scan is probably the most common used test for looking for cancer cells that may have spread. And I would be comfortable with a CAT scan if I were you.
I hope your ca 125 is normal and your CAT shows no sign of further cancer.
Please let us know how it goes.

CA125/CT Scan vs PET

Karen is a nurse. My mom and dad (retired nurse and doctor, respectively) would both say that it's a little-known fact that nurses often know just about as much as doctors. :-)

CA125/CT Scan vs PET

It seems I don't have to worry about CA 125 since my cancer is cervical, not ovarian.

But I'm still wondering if the PET can pick up little cancer "seedlings" better than the CT. I know the CT is a great tool, but one of our sisters mentioned that a PET found some tiny cancers that the CT didn't.
