new to hormone therapy, need help!!

Ladies:
I was just started on premarin .625mg in the hospital. To my knowledge no blood work was done specifically for hormone levels prior to starting. At 6 week checkup, told doctor breast tenderness, hot flashes, sleeplessness had increased. He wants to start me on prometrium 100mg. I'm reading in threads about levels being checked. My doc has not mentioned anything about doing any bloodwork. From what I'm reading about prometrium, it doesn't sound like I can expect improvement from my symptoms? Is my doc on the right track?
I'm becoming concerned about my treatment. Please advise!
Thanks for your help!!! Susan

Susan,
By hanging around this website you will soon learn that every woman is different. What works for one doesn't work for the next. Sounds like your doc is going with the old "one size fits all" method. Ask him if this doesn't work for you what other options you have. If he isn't willing to discuss other options -- and you are still having problems--it's time to move on. Many woman find that the bioidentical hormones are easier on our systems (less side effects). However, there are many women that use premarin and do fine on it. I would be persistant with questions to the doc if you are still having side effects. You should be sleeping and feeling good! Prometrium works for some women but others of us have not been able to tolerate it. I use progestrone cream (bioidentical). I don't experience any side effects from it and it allows me all the sleep I need. I hope you find your answers soon. Hugs and prayers!

Texas Jill
What is the name of the cream you are using?

I too was started on Premarin in the hospital, my one size fits all dose was 1.25. After I got home and started the research, I took myself off of the Premarin. I took it from 8/16/00 until 9/11/00. Haven't taken anything since, and so far so noticeable side effects. Told dr. I wanted more knowledge before I decided on what to take. I go back to dr. in 2 months and hope to have some ideas of what I want to put in/on my body. I have been talking with others I know about what they are taking and haven't found many who are satisfied with what they have. I would rather have a cream than pills or patch. There is just so much info out there that I may be overwhelmed. (ps Texas Jill, I'm from The Great State of Texas too.)

Have you both visited http://www.hormonejungle.com There is much info there about your many choices for HRT. Bio-identical hormones come in cream, pill, patch, and troches. So you do have many choices. We are all very different, so you will have to find the method of delivery and doseage that works best for you.
Good luck Merle and Susan!
Hugs :-)
