pain during sex

Hi. First time here. Had my TAH on Oct. 2, 2003. All went well for a while. But as my scar healed where my cervix was taken out it became verrrrrry painful during sex. It hurts so bad that I cry. The wrong scar tissue grew over the scar and the Dr. lanced it and now he says that it's all healed, he doesn't see anything wrong. It still hurts, so he gave me some Premarin vaginal cream to use. It's gotten about 85% better, but still painful. He wants to put me under and see what is on the other side if the pain doesn't go away!! Any help? Thanks

I'm sorry that it's hurting so bad for you. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.

I thought that all my problems would be over after this was done. I had a very active sex life before I started with the problems. Now it's almost nonexistent because of pain during and after sex.

Does he know what may be causing it that he wants to look at the inside?

Please let me know how you are doing.

pain during sex

Hi Karen
No the Dr. doesn't have any idea what might be causing the pain. He says he won't stop searching until he finds out though. I love my Dr. and am confident in him. He just hasn't come across this before! And there is no apparent reason for the pain. There are a few other things going on as well. A burning sensatation and feelings of sadness. I'm waiting for the medical things to clear up to then see if the sadness goes away.

pain during sex

I have the same thing too... with the vaginal cuff. Mine is very painful to the touch. I am a year post-TAH.

I have been told two quite different things. One doctor told me I must have a neuroma on the vaginal cuff or some sort of neuropathy or neuralgia. The other doctor told me that it could be endo.

I have seen this symptom listed under a thing called "post-hysterectomy syndrome" on the internet.

Both doctors told me that it may require surgery to resect the scar, check for endo, and put it back together.

I am sorry you are having such trouble. I hope we all find an answer!

I know what you mean about the sadness. Some days are worse than others.

I'm glad you have a good doctor that you trust. To be honest, personally, I'm getting tired of them.

When do you go back to the Dr's?

pain during sex

I adore my Gyn. He has been with me and helping me for a long time.

Here is the thing I am most tired of.... everyone putting their hands in "there" and poking around! With the exception of my regular Gyn, I am starting to dread when I go to a different doctor that they are going to want to examine me. The urologist, the pain specialist, the PT, the second opinion Gyn, the interventional pain specialist.... they all want to have a look.

I also just recently stopped PT where the PT was doing internal massage of my pelvic floor. It was very painful and not helpful but the other thing was that I just don't want people putting their hands in there anymore.

Am I just turning into a nut?

Thanks for listening. This has been bothering me for several weeks.... this thought anyway.

I don't think you are a nut. I'm to the point that I don't want to be touched by anyone. I think when you have gone through what some of the ladies here have gone through your tolerance just starts to vanish.

What is a neuroma?

I agree! Who wants to have strangers looking in there all the time! On the other hand, we need to do what we have to do to get better.

Everyone is so nice in here. It has been uplifting reading. The world is full of wonderful people! At least sometimes thats the way I see the world. lol

I go back to the Dr. the end of Aug. I'm suppose to use the cream everyother day until then. Then of course I need to have sex to find out if it still hurts. Needless to say I don't enjoy it, which is hard for my dh. lol I just wait for the pain to start!

The burning sensation that I have most of the time is getting to me, which I haven't really talked to the Dr. about yet. I wonder if it's from the cream. I can't remember if it started before or after.

Is the burning sensation constant now? Is it in the lower abdomen or more to one side?

What is Post hysterectomy syndrome?

pain during sex

Hi Everyone,

Here is what I understand from the doctor...

Post hysterectomy syndrome is when you have pain in the vaginal cuff/scar after your hysterectomy. The pelvic pain specialist I saw said it is something to do with the nerve endings and scar tissue and he sometimes will do injections in the vaginal cuff scar to destroy the nerve endings causing the problem... that was his view on it anyway. I have also read that it can be resolved by re-cutting the scar and sewing it back up... maybe the doctor cuts the old scar tissue off too.... I am not sure.

The other doctor I saw thought I had endo in the scar ... which I have read is a possibility if you have a history of endo in the cul de sac area... I tend to think that my problem is with the nerves right now.

I *think* a neuroma is when you develop a small abcess on the nerve ending that was cut. That is how I understood what the pain specialist had told me but I have never looked that up to verify my understanding. So, as I understood, the pain specialist would inject the neuromas he thinks are causing the pain in the vaginal cuff scar with something that essentially "freezes" them... and hopefully they no longer cause pain after that.

I haven't had any diagnosis of this particular pain verified and I have not yet had any treatment for it. It is unfortunately one of my less disruptive pain problems right now... (that is why the one doctor thinks I still have endo...).

I hope we all find some resolution to this problem. I will definately post something if I find a more definitive answer.
