Pre-Op Nerves

I am due to have my op on 18th August and although I am not too worried about the operation I have been asked if I want to have my overies removed or left, the choice is mine. Can anyone give me advice on which is the better choice?

Pre-Op Nerves

Hello, Gill!

You've asked a really loaded question...there are many, many different factors that might be pertinent to your particular situation. For instance, is there a history of ovarian cancer in your family? Are you already in menopause or perimenopause? Do you smoke (HRT is not recommended for women who smoke)? etc., etc. It all depends on you and the situation in which you find yourself.

My dr. told me the same thing -- it was up to me. So I made him help me make a list of the pros and cons of taking the ovaries. In my case, I had begun perimenopause at age 40. I had miserable hot flashes and night sweats, even though I still was on birth control pills. Thus, it was clear that my ovaries were giving up the ghost anyway. That fact, along with some other things, led me to decide WITH MY DRS HELP that taking the ovaries made sense. It is a very complicated decision, and one drs seem to sometimes be reluctant to recommend, even if they think it is the right thing to do. But in my opinion, you need his/her help if you are going to make a rational decision. Maybe you tell your dr that you don't want him/her to make the decision, but you'd like his/her help in reviewing the pros and cons, that would work. I'd at least give it a try.

By the way, I have been on the Vivelle .1 patch since my surgery 4 weeks ago. Not a single hot flash! It has worked great for me!

Good luck. I'll send prayers your way that you make the right decision for you. Also, prayers for a successful surgery and a perfect recovery.
