2 mg Estriol too much?

Dear Hyster Sisters:

I had a TAH on 9/17/03. Even though I have breast cancer all over my family tree on both sides, my gyn sent me home with Premarin. Luckily I did some research and never picked up the prescription.

About 2 weeks after surgery the hot flushes in day and night began. I bought some natural progesterone cream, been using it for about 2 weeks. I am still loosing too much sleep from night sweats, so I called my gyn today and told him I did not fill the Premarin, that I would prefer not to use synthetic hormones, and what about some Estriol? He tried to be sympathetic and honor my wishes, but I could tell this was a request that is out of his normal path. He sent me to a pharmacy to pick up a presciption for 2 mg Estriol.

When I asked the female pharmacist if this doesn't seem like a high dose she gave me a lecture....."how do you know what's too high? how does your doc know what's too high? you don't have any estrogen right now......there's a lot of misinformation out there about NHRT...........etc. etc." She was snippy and made me feel like this was a dumb route to take.

BOTTOM LINE.....she told me it normally takes 2-3 days to fill this type of prescription because it has to be compounded. She had this dosage already on the shelf for the only one other customer who uses Estriol. So I figured out that when my gyn called in and she already had this dosage ready, the two of them decided to give it to me. I did not come home with the presciption, something did not feel right.

Unbelievable. I know the answer here, I simply must not rely on my gyn for hormone advice. I must find an NHRT consultant. But I'm still curious if anyone out there thinks that dose seems high to you.

Thanks,

Cindy

2 mg Estriol too much?

Hi Cindy! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience... maybe she had just had another customer give her a hard time or something? Your question was not out of line.

If you were getting estradiol, then I would say 2mg is a relatively high dosage, although we do have a couple of ladies around here who use that much. But estriol is much weaker than estradiol, so 2mg does not sound out of line to me at all.

My DR uses the book "The Women's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine" by Tori Hudson, ND as a guide in prescribing HRT's. It also has good information on equivalences between different HRT's.

Kudos to you for investigating your choices and pushing for what you feel is right for you. I hope it works out for you!

s,
-Linda

Estriol Dose

Cindy, in the past I have used 2 mgs estriol and also at another time I used 4 mgs of estriol daily (oral). I had a natural early menopause and retain my ovaries but even 4 mgs. did not give me periods (I use progesterone, also). Estriol is alleged to be about 80% "weaker" than estradiol so 2-4 mgs daily is a common dose. Of course, everyone reacts differently so you will only know by trying and experimenting with it.

If you have an insurance mail-order pharmacy, call and see if they do compounding. Mine does (MedcoHealth) and it is much cheaper. Diana

2 mg Estriol too much?

Dear Linda and Diana,

Thanks most earnestly for your replys. I did pick up my Estrial prescription for 2 mg. I am hoping that between this and the progesterone cream that I can eliminate night sweats. I am up and down in the night about 10 times. I have read that it takes up to six weeks to get things working..........Geesh, I'll be a walking zombie by then!

If you don't mind my asking, did the Estrial and progesterone cream work for you utimately? I read one post from a gal who said she would just get something working for her and it would last only about 3 months then she would have to find something else. Man, this is going to be interesting.

Thanks again for your replys. They helped me a lot.

Warm (literally) regards,

Cindy
