Hernia surgery 1yr after TAH BSO - have a question on vaginal discharge

On 10/15/03, I had outpatient surgery for two hernias and a trapped nerve. I started having a vaginal discharge this morning that has increased and has blood in it. I had a TAH BSO on 10/8/02. I have experienced yeast infections before, but never have I bled with one. I suffered several after my TAH BSO but things calmed down after my hormones adjusted. This seems to have come on rather quickly and was wondering if anyone else has had bleeding with a yeast infection? I also examined myself and I am extremely red externally. I am not on any antibiotics but was using Darvacet and Fiorcet after my recent surgery. Should I buy over the counter medicine for a yeast infection or should I call the doctor on Monday??? A general surgeon did my hernia repair that was referred to me by my gyn. If I call a doctor, which one would you suggest calling? This is so frustrating - it would be nice to have no surprises. I thought I was doing so good!!! Oh well. I do have an appointment with the general surgeon on Tuesday to remove stitches/strips. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Leslie

Hernia surgery 1yr after TAH BSO - have a question on vaginal discharge

Hi Leslie That sounds awfully uncomfortable! I did have a little blood (a few drops) with a yeast infection once, and that one was hard to get rid of. However, you can also have bleeding with some types of bacterial infections and other problems. I would get in to be seen by a DR, and sooner rather than waiting until Monday. If it is a yeast infection, allowing it to go untreated for three more days isn't a good idea, and if it's something else, treating yourself for a yeast infection won't help either.

My first choice in your situation would be to call my GP/family doc/internist and ask to speak to the DR on call to see what you should do. Alternatively, do you have access to a walk in clinic in your area? (My kids affectionately refer to ours as a "doc in the box" .) That might be a place to start if you don't have a DR you're working with right now whom you can call after hours. Many of these clinics are open on weekends and have shorter waiting times than the ER (your next option) would have.

Let us know what you find out, OK?
s,
-Linda

I agree w/ (((Linda))), Leslie I've also had a few drops of blood appear before w/ a yeast infection but I would still be on the safe side & call your to let him/her know what's going on & they'll be able to advise any further treatment you should seek

Good Luck & pls let us know how your doing.....(((hugs)))

call doc

Leslie, I am sorry to hear of your hernia repair...and now additional worries! I would call your gyn and see what their advice would be. If you get no joy there, call the surgeon or your PCP. In any case you should be seen.
I had a hernia repair a month ago, and this week went for my annual gyn exam(still have some cervical tissue) and one of the questions she asked me, and she prefaced it with, "this may sound like a strange question, but have you had any vaginal bleeding since the hernia repair?" So, that says to me that it could happen.....and it is her "area".
In any case, don't let it go, call SOMEONE!

Hernia surgery 1yr after TAH BSO - have a question on vaginal discharge

Linda, Sheri, and Molly:

Thank you for responding to my question. I have decided to wait and call my surgeon on Monday. I bought some monostat cream for external use on Friday night and that has brought much relief externally!!! I want to seek advice from my surgeon or gyn because I am still rather swollen/tender from my recent surgery and they know my history. I am scared that if I go to a clinic that it will be very uncomfortable and they are not aware of what all I have been through this last year! The spotting has reduced!! I will make sure that I follow this through so no other problems develop!!! From my experiences this past two years, it seems that I get answers/results from speaking directly to my doctor. I have not seen my family dr in over 2 years (besides my feminine problems and recent hernias, I am a healthy person!!)

Molly: I am curious if your gyn might have said why there might be bleeding from vagina after a hernia repair? I no longer have a cervix and my incision was abdominal. That is why this is puzzling me. They did give me a shot before my recent surgery to dry my system up in order to reduce chances of nausea/vomiting and I am wondering if this also caused my vaginal tissues to dry out and caused extreme irritation. I hope all is going well for you since your hernia repair

Thanks for the support!! It is very nice to communicate with others that have been through this!!!!!
