has anyone had a Dr's mistake??

I had a full hyst on 06/05/03 when my Dr left the or room someone else was to do all the sewing up, they didn't!!
All i had was some staples on top, i kept going to my Dr every week suffering, my stomach looked 9 months pregnant, and was
leaking!! She kept saying everything was fine.. 3 weeks later
'all' my insides rupured!! I was on a wound vac for 6 weeks
as I now had a 3x3 open hole in my stomach!! it is now 6 months
out, still have a open hole in my stomach, have went thru 3 surgureys and looking at the 4th in January. I am so upset as
I studied everything I could on hysts before hand, never in my
worst nightmare could see something like this happening.
Now i feel like a drug addict with the pain meds, the antibotics,
the anti depressents and I cannot see the end here, this road
is getting longer and longer!! Has anyone went thru something like this???

(((Linda)))
I am sorry that you're having such a difficult time. I did have problems with an incision after a laprotomy pre hyst days. While I was still in the hospital the incision was bleeding pretty badly. The nurse came in to change the bandage and only brought a piece of gauze. I told her that I didn't think it would hold the blood and she just rolled her eyes at me. Needless to say I called for the nurse in about 10 minutes because I was leaking everywhere!

Unbelievable that the doc still let me go home with the incision oozing. When I went in for a post op check up a week later the nurse came in and strapped a kotex across my belly to hold the blood. At the time I was clueless but knew something wasn't right.

Finally on my next visit I insisted to the doc that something wasn't right and he FINALLY agreed and sent me to a wound specialist. My staples were removed and the doc found a bunch of hematomas (blood clots) and had to bust them up (yes it was gross, sorry) The incision was than irrigated, cleaned and packed. It was left open.

I had to see the doc every day for about 2 weeks to be unpacked, cleaned and repacked. After that he showed me how to do it at home in the shower.

It was unnerving to say the least to see a big gaping hole in my belly. Even dh got kind of sick at the sight of it. The doc kept reassuring me that it would heal and eventually close up. I cried many a night thinking that it would never heal.

I am happy to report that the doc was right, it did eventually heal and close on its own. It did take alot of work and following doctor's orders.

After the laprotomy I had 3 more surgeries and than the hystectomy. Following the hyst I've had 5 additional surgeries, 2 unrelated to the hyst. I can relate to how you're feeling Linda. Most of my female problems began after a dental procedure when I had an infection set in and than after the laprotomy everything really snowballed on me. But ya' know, I can't go back and change the past, I have to keep moving forward and try to get better. I owe it to myself and to my family.

Hang in there my friend, you are not alone in this place we call the Road.

has anyone had a Dr's mistake??

Hi, I tell women all the time watch your own body. As in both our
cases we knew there was something wrong, in my case my idiot
Dr kept saying 'your fine'. When I asked why the leaking she said
use a kotex to cover it, the swelling she said was normal!!
The day everything ruptured I had seen her, she said after scrubbing my stomach, to take some asperin!! I went 3 weeks in
a row. complaining, she kept saying your fine!! My surgeons all
said I was dying, the gangrene had hit my bowel, stomach, and
everything else inside, I spent 18 hours in surgury!!! I also had a
ruputered hernia in there that had somehow went thru my stomach wall. My surgeons all said if I had not went to the hospital on my own, and listened to her, I would not have made
it to morning!! In what happened to me I learned we have to 'know' and watch our bodies, 'we' have to protect ourselves!!
In my case it was the difference between life and death!! But I have learned if your Dr is blowing you off, run to another.. My poor
little primary Dr has been watching the hole every week sence august (he had recommended her) he said he had 'never' seen
something like this in 25 years of being a Dr!! I have went thru 11
infections in the hole, 1 was so bad it ment surgury again!
Now I look like I'm pregnant, I have this ball in my stomach so I am having a tummy tuck to repair it, its painful, its got to go..
Plus 6 months out and I still have to change the dressings on the hole twice a day!! This has to go!!!! Linda

has anyone had a Dr's mistake??

Thank You. I'm hoping once I have the tummy tuck I will feel a lot
better, toteing this basketball around is wearing me out! I wear
a size 10-12 but anything around the ball has to be a size 16!!!
I wear a girdle EVERY SINGLE DAY. I did not know this before, but
a build up of scar tissue hurts, ALL THE TIME!! Before I had this done I never even took asperin! Now I take so many pills I feel like a addict!! I wish I had found this site BEFORE I had the hyst
I dought I would of had it, I never knew there could be as many
problems as there is with hyst! Every girlfriend I had went in and out and back to work in a month, happy happy happy! I have
one girlfriend that cancelled her hyst after her trip to see me in
ICU.. What I am seeing on here is all the hernia's and that is
upsetting, I know we all had to go thru the pretests to see if we
could handle the surgurys, and then come every type of hernia
there is, it seams they should do cat scans to see if we have
any hernias before they open us up! I never heard of a hernia
before going with a hyst, have you?? Linda

Another possibility is a faulty stapling instrument. There's been a lot in the news lately of these things misfiring and the doctors don't know that it has happened until the patient is in the ICU going septic because of an open hole.

Considering what happened you are actually lucky to be alive. I am so sorry this happened to you and wish you all the best .

has anyone had a Dr's mistake??

I agree their stapler could of been broke. But I feel like as many tests as they put me thru before they even did the hyst, as soon
as my idiot Dr saw my stomach swelling to 10 months pregnant
look she herslf should of 'ran' me to a cat scan!!! And the fountain
I had coming out of my stomach should of give her a clue!!
Instead she ignored it and didn't even tell me I was in any danger
I had soooooooooo much trust in this Dr it was sickening, I had went to her for 3 years, and I felt like her being a woman she
would be more understanding of women.. My husband is still so
furious with her, he can never forgive her. My husband point blank
asked her about the infection (the surgeons told him about it)
she told my husband 'there was no infection!!) Straight up lied!!
I don't know about you but when I really trust someone such as a
Dr, the let down is hell.. My primary Dr said the first thing they teach them in med school is, when you screw up admit it, otherwise you make total enimies out of your patients!! This is the truth, I hate her. Linda

Dear Linda,

What a horrible, horrible experience!!!! Unbelievable!!! There are no words for what you had to go through, and are still going through. My heart goes out to you, and I wish you well. I can sure understand why your husband was furious!!

My doctor's mistake was a ruptured bladder.
