Radiation Low Blood Count Question

After two weeks of radiation, 9 treatments to whole abdomen/pelvic area, this is what my blood counts have done:
White Blood Cell dropped from 7.5 to 3.9
Platelet Count dropped from 204 to 99
They are classified on report as "low".

Have any of you all had this happen while receiving radiation?
And what do they do about it?

Thanks,
nancy j.

Blood Test Results

While my platelets never went below the normal range, both my WBCs and lymphocytes became lower than normal during radiation. No treatment was deemed necessary by my rad-onc or gyn-onc.

In the four years since completing radiation, my WBCs have never completely gone back into the normal range, but all my doctors, including my two oncologists and my primary physician, state that there is no clinical significance to my levels. I never have required any treatment, nor have I had any health problems whatsoever as a result of the slightly lower than normal readings.

Radiation Low Blood Count Question

Hi, Nancy. I had both chemo and radiation therapy at the same time. Low blood counts is a side effect of both. Since I had a double whammy, my oncologist really kept a close eye on me. I got shots of Neulasta (for the white blood cells) every three weeks with my chemo. I also took an iron supplement (I just can't recall the name of it right now). It was an over the counter drug, though.

With these, I never had to delay treatment due to blood counts that were too low.

Keep in mind that in both cases of chemo and radiation, the body is working so hard to flush all those dead cells out of the body.

Radiation Low Blood Count Question

Just a quick post... I did become "officially" anemic as a result of the treatments. I'm fine now, though. It was just temporary and the counts are just about back up to normal.

Radiation Low Blood Count Question

MoeKay and Maureenie, thank you

I guess it just kindof shocked me that they would fall so quickly during the radiation.
I know it is to be expected during chemo and the nurses told me I would receive some type of shot to help build the wbc then.

I guess it is always a possibility that I may have to have the shot during radiation.
