Abnormal Pap after hyst. and radiation

I finished radiation for a 1b cervical cancer 2 months ago. I had my TAV in May. The nurse said my pap test was normal. However when I received a copy it said that it was abnormal and I had
Low Grad Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion - mild dysplasia.
Has anyone had this after radiation? What was the next step.
Do they wait until it turns into advanced dysplasia?
Please advise.

Abnormal Pap after hyst. and radiation

Katie, I just want to let you know that I had my surgery in April; I finished radiation in mid-August. When I saw my gyn oncologist in October (i.e., 2 months after radiation was completed), and asked him why he wasn't doing a PAP then, he responded that it was really too soon. In other words, there could still be some cells in the "recovery" process from the radiation.

I saw my regular gyn on Friday and she did do the PAP test (and here it is 4 months after I finished radiation).

When I read your post, that was the first thing that came to mind. Perhaps it was too soon to do the test and what's showed up on the test are all those cells that are still in the healing stage.

Of course, check with your doctor (and let us know how it goes).

Best,

Pap after radiation

Both my rad/onc and my gyn/onc said that it was not possible to do a valid Pap smear until at least 3 months after radiation treatment. They said it simply show radiated cells and little else. But I don't know about the dypslasia report. I'd call the doctor's office and ask about the discrepancy between the report and what the nurse told you.
