after the radiation then what ???

Hi ladies,

I have started my 3rd week with radiation & wow are my bowels and bladder angry.

Anyway, I know I will need to follow up with a pap smear (every 3 months ?? or so)

My question.... If I had a TAH/BSO (I understand radiation is for cells that could be lingering) I assume the pap is for the vagina... but... I have read about others having their nodes checked.
Well, this kinda freaked me out. I am clueless. I know the cancer was serious, but is it possible to come back and attack my lymph nodes as well? How does the onc/dr. check for that ?

What should I be asking ?? Checking on? Researching?

If anyone can enlighten me I would be soooooo grateful.

During a hyst for cancer, many docs remove some lymph nodes as part of what is called "staging" - that is they check to see if any cancer cells are in the lymph nodes, which is one way cancer can spread.

Treatments after surgery such as radiation and/or chemo are meant to get any cancer cells "hanging out" in tissues near the radiated area.

Depending on your exact type of cancer and its stage, some docs do a CT scan periodically as well as a pap to look for evidence that the cancer is still around.

You should ask your doctor to outline your follow-up schedule.

After radiation they will wait to do a pap test until 3 or 4 months
because they want you to heal. They they will do a pap test.

Always ask for copies of your pap tests. Also learn what the terminology is because it helps with understanding the tests better.

Healing from radiation side effects took me about 2 months to feel better. They say for every month of treatment it takes 2 months to recover.

Happy Holidays

Angry bowels

Hi Jana!
I'm in the midst of my radiation treatments too! Today was number 17 of 28.
Are you sticking to your diet of low fiber, low residue foods?
Also, are you using Imodium AD?
