When can I have my first drink post op?

I had a TAH on 12-12 and am doing great so far. My recovery has been uncomplicated and not as painful as I expected (thank God!). Some friends invited us over for New years eve, with the kids, to hang out and enjoy each others company. Do you think I can have a drink or two by then? I didn't have general anasthesia, had an epidural. I feel like I'm not supposed to do anything from my previous life until at least 6 weeks post op. Any thoughts?

When can I have my first drink post op?

I would definately ask your doctor. Most pain medications shouldn't be mixed with alcohol, so that would be my concern. I had a glass of wine at about 5 and 1/2weeks post-op. It was a friends b-day, but I had asked my doc the previous day.

Take care.

When can I have my first drink post op?

I went home only on extra-strength Tylenol, so I was able to take a drink right away.

When can I have my first drink post op?

Dear Mogie:
Until you asked the question I never thought of it. I was on no medication when I came home from the hospital. TAH on Oct. 27 and home on Oct. 30. I had a glass of wine when I walked in the door celebrate it being over

When can I have my first drink post op?

Ladies,

Please don't drink alcohol while you're taking any drugs containing acetominophen (tylenol.) You could damage your liver by doing this. It is never safe to take tylenol while drinking alcohol. If you read the label on your tylenol bottle, it probably cautions you about this practice.

Best wishes,
Helen

I drank

a few after 3 weeks post op, but I made sure I didnt take any pain medication before I drank. I think that would be the only stipulation about drinking is the medication you are on..

doesn't mix with antibiotics either

I don't know when I might have been able to have a glass of wine after my hyst, but as my urololgist found cystitis cystica (chronic cystitis) I was on antibiotics for 6 weeks and alcohol was off the list then!

Only other concern is that alcohol also acts as a muscle relaxant so be very careful with your tum as you may wonder on Boxing Day why you are suddenly sore! Have a great Christmas and hope your recovery continues so well. Cheers, Linda
