PET Scans

As I shall be having a PET scan in the next couple of weeks can anyone tell me what they are like please. I have heard they are claustrophobic?

Thanks a lot

PET Scans

HI Shelia,

I have PET Scans every 3-4 months and they are not bad at all, just a bit boring. First they inject a radioactive type sugar in your vein. ( the only thing that hurts for a minute. ) then you have to sit in a darkened room for 45 minutes, to calm your brain waves, They tell you to try not to think! Usually not thinking isn't a probelm for me, but being told not to think sets my mind going! then you lay in the PEt scanner, which is like and MRI machine, but your head is not in it. The machine is noisy and the room cold, but they give you blankets. you have to lay still for 45 minutes and if you are lucky you can doze bit, but it is painless and there is no prior prep except no eating after midnight the preceding day
