Anestesia vs. epidural

Hi everyone. I have to decide which method to use in the OR. I am very scared of anestesia, but have gone under before (about 15 years ago.) My friend was telling me that she was scared, too, and they gave her valium or something but not general, and an epidural, and it was a breeze. She went back to work in three weeks after having the abdominal surgery.

I don't know which way they are going. I have an ultrasound and biopsy on Monday, which will give my doctor a better idea. We have tentatively scheduled January 20th and I'm getting nervous.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Anestesia vs. epidural

Hi,
I too have a fear of general anesthisa and I did my TAH with a combination epidural/spinal and then I left the epidural in for 24 hours for pain control. This really worked for me.

The "A" man had me do the combination in case the surgery took longer than expected. A spinal only last for a few hours and it's a one time deal. The epidural can be redosed but it takes a while to "work up" and so he did the combination. I only had one stick; he did the epidural and then dosed the spinal through it. I didn't feel the epidural going in at all. I have since had a spinal for another procedure and I did feel the stick, but it wasn't bad, it just stung for a minute.

During my surgery I had some valium to keep me calm and it did make me feel sleepy at times. However for the most part I was wide awake. I remember talking to the nurse and giving her a list of books and authors that I liked and I even talked to my doctor during my surgery and I remember the conversation. I also remember looking at the clock off and on.

There are drugs they can give you so you don't remember things, but I didn't have them and I was ok with it.

Do a search and you will find many opinions on doing this subject. Read them, talk to you doctor and the "A" person and make your decision. I recommed talking to the "A" person before the day of the surgery that way you know going in what's going to take place.

If I can be of any more help, please let me know.
