Vitamin D helps against RA, maybe other immune disorders

I know that one of the thing plaguing some of you is immune disorders that developed. This is preliminary research into the link between vitamin D and rheumatoid arthritis, but since it's a good idea anyway to get enough vitamin D (but not too much), I thought I'd post it here. It can't hurt!

The study found that women with highest levels of vitamin D intake are about one third less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis (RA) than women with the lowest levels. The study looked at the data from 30,000 women in menopause, part of the Iowa Women's Health Study. None of the women examined had RA at the beginning of the study. Eleven years later, they looked at who had developed RA.

High dietary (at least 290 IU/day) and supplemental (at least 400 IU/day) intake were associated with 28 percent and 34 percent reductions, respectively, in the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

There was a trend toward a lower rheumatoid arthritis risk with greater intake of milk products, but the best protection seemed to come from the levels from the supplements.

They don't know yet why the vitamin D seems to affect the immune system, but as I said, it's already good for us, so it's probably worth a try.
