Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

Hi all-

I am 2.5 yrs post op and have had no problems.

Several months ago.. (August) I started having pain near my ribs on the right side. The PCP said it was a muscle pull and prescribed Mobic. If I took two Mobic a day the pain went away. I did some stretching and... except for some tenderness on the right side that NEVER went away I felt pretty good.

Then in October I moved a large piece of furniture and OUCH! Back to the PCP I went and more anti inflamatories and this time a muscle relaxer. OK. Then the meds ran out and the pain was back in full force. PS The meds never took all the pain away but, did take the edge off.

So... Back to the Doctors in November and then again in December. Finally I saw a different Doc in the practice who claimed although he did not think it was my gall bladder he wanted me to have an US.

US on 12/31/03 was negative for gall stones. Had Abdominal and Pelvic CT with contrast yesterday. Sounds odd but I pray it is a diseased gall bladder because I am about SICK of this. I need to know what is wrong inside of me.

I have upper abdominal pain that radiates to the back, feels sore for days after. The only thing that does not set me into another attack is liquids and dry bread or bagels. YUMM

A nurse practiioner who is a neighbor mentioned that it is very common for women who had a hyster to have their GB removed several years later due to diseased GB. I was wondering if there are any other princesses who have experienced this.

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

Interesting you should mention this. I am just a couple weeks shy of my 1st anniversary since my hyster and in Oct/03 I had an ultra sound done to try and find the nature of the pain I am still having. They found some gallstones, though all of my pain is lower abdomin (incision area and lower). Just last week I saw a GI doctor who decided he did not want to do anything about it right now. I really am not having any symptoms from the gallstone (he said my pain was too low) so he has decided not to do anything untill or if I have symptoms. I certainly wonder how long those stones have been there. Perhaps linked to the hyster? No idea. I never thought to ask anyone about that. Next week I am back to my GP and no doubt after that off to my gyno to talk about my pain. I am thinking adhesiens but nothing definate yet.

Had mine out just a short few years after mine. Sounds like that could be the problem.

Mine was pretty bad (3 times larger than should've been and the stones finally blocked the common bile duct/pancreatic duct) which resulted in other illnesses and nearly cost me my life.

Don't wait until it gets that serious. I was scared to go under the knife again, but dying wasn't the option I was looking for.

I had problems getting a proper dx then finding a surgeon who would do it.

Go asap and get an ultra sound of your gall bladder - tell them about your pain/problems eating and surely they can make the connection.

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

I've had similar issues and had my gall bladder removed a year ago October. Even though I didn't have anything showing on the US a hida scan proved my gallbladder was non-functioning. So you may want to ask your Dr. about the possibility of seeing if a Hida Scan could be helpful in finding the source of your pain. I hope you get some relief soon!

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

I had my hyster surgery 12/2002, my gallbladder was removed 3/2003. I was going through the same problems as you, one night it was so bad my dh to me the ER, they did several test at first on the gallbladder and they all came back normal then they did a test with nucleur contrast and found out the gallbladder was not working at all! It was taken out the next morning.

Hang in there!!!

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

I had mine out 2 years after my hyst. I had gone to one doctor who did a boat load of tests on me and confirmed nothing (and he was a specialist). Went to a family doctor who put me in the hospital the next week for surgery. All this time, my DH who is a paramedic told my folks it was my gall bladder and he finally got someone to listen to us. I was also told this is normal after a hyst. I hope you can get some relief soon. It is so frustrating to jump through hoops.

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

I actually had mine out one year before. Started having severe chest pain and nausea and dropped 20 pounds in a month. Went through all sorts of heart testing, mri's, etc. I did not have stones so they said everything checked out.

My SIL is a nurse and demanded they do a functional test and they found my gallbladder was not draining at all. It was down to 8% should have been in the upper 30% range. Also, developed Pancreatitis which has made me have digestive problems for a year. The good news is it is slowly getting better and the chest pains all went away after my gallbladder came out. No problems with that surgery. My downfall was when they did an ERCP to find out what was causing my Pancreatitis, this a week after my gallbladder came out. I spent the entire month of November 2003 in the hospital from both procedures. I was one of the people that developed a worsening of the Pancreatitis after they did the ERCP. I was later told by 3 different doctors it should have never been done (the ERCP).

Anyway, I hope you find help. I think it is your gallbladder. Just see if they will run more tests like a functional test and see what they come up with. Good Luck

MaryAnn- have them check your amylase and lipase levels to see if they are elevated. Sometimes pain radiating to the back can be pancreas as well.

Has anyone else had Gall Bladder removed since Hyster?

I had my gall bladder taken out 18 months after my hyster.

I had pain in my right side and I would even feel it in my back. I ended up in the ER one night because the pain was so bad. The surgeon at the hospital didnt think it was my gall bladder. He thought I needed to see a urologist.

My family doctor disagreed and had me have the Contrast study and the nuclear study done. The results were negative but I was still having trouble. He still believed it was my gall bladder.

He referred me to another surgeon who was also a urolgoist and he agreed. They took out my gall bladder and my appendix ( something they do in Iowa, lived there at the time). The pathology on the gall bladder showed that it had a chronic infection in the lining of the gall bladder. Just what my doctor thought it was. He said the infection had probably been there for years.

Hope everything turns out OK for you.
