Hi I am new. I am extrelmely overweight and I am having a hysterecotomy on Tues Jan 27. Went to Dr. Monday Jan 15 for u/s for abnormal bleeding. Endometrial lining extremely thick Dr. took 3 endo biopsys to check for endometrial cancer and recommended going ahead with Hyst since having problems with endometriosis and pcos for about 6 yrs.I am really scared. Are there any ladies out there who have had a hyst. that were really heavy. How did you do? I need all the help I can get. I am a basket case. People keep telling me how good I will feel when it is all said and done but, I am sooo scared. Thanks so much. Robin

Take Care...

I too am extremely overweight and am do to have surgery in a week. The only thing my doctor has mentioned is that, she is doing a TAH, which means that they will be cutting the ABD and going through that way. We could have done a Lap, but because of my size it is just easier.
I too have thick lining and PCOS, so I totally understand where you are coming from. My goes out to you. Please feel free to PM me anytime!

Good luck!

I too am pretty fluffy, had a tah/bso on Dec. 15 and have had no problems! I just had steristrips on to keep the incision together and that worried me terribly, but no problems there either. After showering, I would pat the area dry and then dry further with a blow dryer. I was so afraid of the unknown but am doing well, you can do it! It will be fine! Good luck, Mari

Crazydazy,

You didn't mention what kind of hysterectomy that you were having. I had a TVH w/ bladder repair on 10-28 and overweight as well. Overall I did very well! I wish you luck and a speedy recovery.

Hi Crazydazy

I'm overweight and had a TAH on 1/6 with a vertical incision. I had staples which were removed yesterday and now have steristrips. I have no pain or bleeding and feel really great. The only time I was uncomfortable was getting out of the bed after surgery. Lifting myself up was hard the first time but now I feel fine. The waiting really is the worse part!

Robin,
I am not obese however the lady that I roomed with for my short stay at the "Castle" was "fluffy" she seemed like she was doing alot better than I...she didn't get up and down as much as me which was smart...I swear I was like a chiwauwau...one of those little spastic dogs that just won't settle down....lol.....but it seems to me because of the additional weight she had she layed there and rested more which is what you are supposed to do.....i am definitely no "skinny-mini" myself by no means.....but she was doing fine in her recovery...just thought I'd share......Good luck try not not worry too much about it all because worrying is such a wasted of time. Plan things out instead. Write it all down on paper.....plan your recovery. I am 6th day post op and had tvh and kept ovaries...i have pain but everyday it slowly gets better....you just have to have lots of patience with yourself.

Robin, Don't worry about the extra weight as far as the op is concerned. I carry considerable exta weight and btw am much older than you yet made it through my TAH/BSO (vertical incision because of cancer dx) and recovery very well.
Your doctor probably will give you support type hose to prevent blood clots. You may also have "inflatable" type hosery on you in your hospital room; a machine sort of inflates and deflates the hose and actually may feel quite relaxing. Of course if the latter proves uncomfortable, you probably can ask them to remove it. I also suggest you consider using an abdominal binder; it is used to provide a little support while your stomach muscles are weak and can be adjusted as loose or tight as one wants. It made me feel like my insides would stay there, of course they really would not go anywhere. My prayers are with you for a complications free surgery and easy recovery.

Hi there - I am having a TAH on the same day as you (Jan 27)! I am big also but it sounds like we will do okay. I'm starting to feel panicky about not being organized and will probably start making lists soon (I have to do that at work but haven't started in real life yet). Here's to having it over and done with soon!

Obese having surgery

This is my very first reply, my second night looking through the site. I, too, am extremely obese and hadn't even thought of that causing a problem...yikes! I'm having TAH due too an 8" mass attached to my right ovary. Now I'm very interested in hearing from others also. I smoke, so with the weight added to the cigarettes I'm a bit aprehensive about the anesthesia. Good luck to us all! ~Susan

I'm supersized -- weighed in last appt. at 295lbs, mostly due to inactivity due to pain -- and I'm having my hyst on the same day as you, as well! My gyn is not concerned about my size, says that I will do fine, and I trust her. I'm having a TAH-BSO with a bikini (horizontal) incision due to bleeding and suspected adeno/endo. Good luck with your Castle visit!
