Radiation woes?

Hi
It has been awhile since my last post. In generaly things have been pretty good. However I have been having some symptoms that I am wondering if anyone else has had the pleasure
I finished with 28 external and three internal radiation reatments about November 15th. Since then I have has some bladder problems that seemed to be treated wel with pyridium. However whenever I stop the medication the symptoms return, but not as strong.
My biggest problem seems to be gas. Some stomach, but nostly intestinal. Many times I think I have to have a bowel movement but it is only gas. Other times both. I do go more frequently than before Radiation, but not uncomfortablely so. It is the gas that is so bothersome. I have tried most of the OVC remedies but it always comes back.
Is this to be expected? If so how long is too long?
Suggesstions please. I am becoming afraid to go out since I am so noisy.
Thanks, Jean

Radiation woes?

Hi Jean,

I finished with my radiation treatments in June 2003. I did not have the bladder problems. But my bowels really have given quite a bit of trouble. It has settled down somewhat in the last month or so.

Did you eat a low residue diet while getting radiation? I had to due to terrible runs. I had to stay on the low residue diet for some time after finishing radiation. Maybe cutting back on certain gassy foods would help until your bowels have had a little more time to heal.

I do think it will get better. Just give it a little more time. Have you talked to you Radiation Oncologist about this problem? Mine was very helpful about any and all problems related to the radiaition.

Good luck

Radiation woes?

Thanks Sharon for your information. I know I am impatient to get on with my life and am sick of eating such a restricted diet. I have yet to eat salad. I did just once soon after treatments were over and was an unhappy camper. I am fine in the morning before eating anything and do fine with things like oatmeal. Any change seems to cause problems. Peanut butter seems to be a real no no. Any ideas on that?
I am now in FLorida and my Rad/ onc is in upstate NY. but I wil call if things do not improve. Did you DR. have any suggestions to make things better?

Radiation woes?

Hi Jean,

No my Rad/Onc pretty much just said go with the low-residue diet. During much of the treatment all I could eat was white rice, white bread, and canned green beans.

Have you tried any of the over-the- counter gas meds like Maalox anti-gas. I used those sometimes.

I wish I could be of more help. I think you are just going to have to be patient.

Take care and Good luck,

Sharon

Noisy Walker

Oh Jean, I have to grin just a teeny bit here

I have considered getting a dog to take every where with me. Then when that "noise" and "odor" happen I can look at the doggie and just sadly shake my head!!!

I can go walking through the house and it just absolutely sneaks up on me!

I had my last radiation treatment January 5 so I am almost two weeks. I didn't have any of this gassiness (is that a word?) until I started to gradually sneak in a few 'normal' foods to my bland diet.
I think it is just kinda like a shock to our intestines. They are having to learn all over again. Remember the little ones when we first gave them baby food??

I really have kept my fingers crossed (and perhaps I should keep my knees crossed too!!) because yesterday and today I have had steamed broccoli and bbq hotdogs.

Noisy? yes. Messy? not so far..........
