Sciatica

Hello, before my TAH surgery, the doctor and I believe my large uterus due to large fibroids was pushing on my sciatica nerver and causing tingling and pain down my left leg. Since surgery 5 weeks ago, the problem is probably 70 percent gone although I can still feel it. Has anyone experienced sciatica problems and did it go away and how long did it take?

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body (an inch in diameter). Nerves take a long time to heal. I had surgery on an arm nerve and was told it could take up to a month for every inch the nerve is long from where it was injured to where the pain manifested for it to heal. The nerve gets used to being pinched and it takes a while for it to learn that it's not pinched anymore. Once you are cleared to exercise, you should ask your dr for stretches for your piraformis muscle. It is the one your sciatic nerve runs through. If he can't help you, ask for a physical therapist.

I had sciatica problems from an old injury. I find when I'm retaining water, it acts up. Like, used to before my period...hasnt happened post LAVH.....i would think you are swollen so maybe when that goes down?

Sciatica

Hey, I've never heard of sciatica/menstrual symptom connection, even after trying to educate myself through many resources about sciatica pain. Thanks for an interesting piece of info! I was in so much pain last summer from sciatica inflammation, I was going to physical therapy 3x/week for a month or more and taking pain/anti-inflammatory meds. At the same time, I was having terrible periods due to enlarged uterus and fibroids. Although the sciatica did finally settle down, I still had occasional flare-ups. Never associated it with my periods! I'm 12 days post-op after LAVH and you're right--my sciatica hasn't been bothering me. I'll be interested to see how long it lasts!

Sciatica

I am having the opposite problem...I had a TVH on Dec 5, 03, had a pretty uneventful recovery, no major problems, the final week, at the suggestion of my gyn. dr, took a trip to Florida to visit an Aunt, dr told me I had one more "free" week of vacation, should go to Fla. I told my DH what dr said, and the next day when I woke, he surprised me with plane tickets...great time, but thats when the problems started...I went back to work 2 weeks ago, and now when I walk at a faster than normal pace( which is what my job requires) first my butt hurts, then goes numb , along with my left leg and foot. It's awful, been to my reg. dr and a chiropractor, says it's a pinched sciatic nerve, my reg dr is running tests...in the meantime, it's been pure h-ll...help me!!!
