Still bloated

Hi everybody, I just want to say how great this board is. I do have one question. My belly is still bloated and can get tender. I thought after 14 weeks I would be 100%. I am really getting depressed because I have always had a problem with my weight and now none of my pants fit me.
Is this normal, or have I just gotten fatter?

Swelly Belly

It's called swelly belly - I had my surgery 11/11/03 and still get it daily!

I can get into my pants in the am -- but off they come in the afternoon and back into pants with elastic waists.

It's not weight gain for me - I weigh the same now as I did before surgery. I have been personally struggling with this -- I've never had a belly before - I carry all my weight on my hips & thighs.

Just give it time......................that's what I've decided after reading all the posts.

Take care -- have patience -- lots of us are in the same boat you are!

Still bloated

I'm only 2 months post-op, but notice that I still get the "swelly belly" too. Some days are great, but on other days, I'm lucky to get my pants zipped. It seems to go in spurts where if I'm bloated, it will last 2-3 days in a row. I've tried to see if there's a pattern, (with activity, what I eat, etc.), and haven't really come up with anything yet. In my case, there's still a lot of gas which is very uncomfortable. Many ladies have posted on here saying that swelly belly can last up to a year post-op! That's no fun!

I don't know if you are on HRT, but a big side effect of that can be weight gain. Have you noticed a change on the scale, or are you noticing bloating anywhere but your belly? My face is the place I notice weight gain in first. Everybody seems to have their "area". Also, many of us aren't real active in the first several weeks post-op, which obviously can contribute to weight gain.

Take care and know that you definitely aren't alone. We're all trying to get accustomed to our new bodies, (some good changes and others, well...)

Have a nice day

Still bloated

Hi socalgal,

The swelling usually lasts on and off for up to 6 mths. As with most things, this can vary from person to person. With me, I had the swelly belly for about 5 months, and it would get worse after exercise or increased physical activity. Yes, it is very normal to have the swelling at your stage still. The fact that your stomach muscles were cut, and that you're still in the process of healing, well, unfortunately it does take time before you're back to your pre-hyst condition. Take care, s
