Mothers & Daughters

My 41 yr. old daughter had a hysterectomy 1-1/2 yrs. ago after a routine checkup showed an ovarian cyst, with no symptoms. One year ago, after a routine checkup, I (at 64) was diagnosed with the SAME THING, also with no symptoms. I chose alternative healing methods; acupuncture, herbal therapy, Reiki, Meditation -- even Feng Shui'd my house. Several months ago a checkup showed no change -- surgery scheduled for Nov. 6th. My 35 yr. old daughter's GYN has put her on birth control pills as a preventative after hearing about her sister's condition. Has anyone ever heard of birth control pills preventing ovarian cysts?

Ovarian Cyst

Hi There,

When I was 17 I had an ovarian cyst that ruptured and I was bleeding pretty badly from it. The doctors wanted to do surgery, but I was petrified & begged them for any possible alternative. They said that as long as the bleeding subsided, it was possbile that the cyst could resolve itself...so they put me on birth control pills to try & prevent more cysts from developing and watched me. Thankfully the cyst did desolve on it's own.

This happened 15 years ago, and I've never had another ovarian cyst. However, I did have a hyst 6 weeks ago due to dysfunctional uterine bleeding that started when I was 26 and never stopped. The doctors said that the ovarian cyst and the dysfunctional uterine bleeding were not necesarily related, but I just wanted to let you know that as long as 15 years ago doctors were using birth control pills to help in preventing ovarian cysts. I don't think it's a guarantee, but just gives patients better odds....

Best wishes to you and your family :-)

Ovarian Cyst

After doing research, I asked my doctor to put me on them to keep me from getting cysts. It worked, but I had to stop taking them because my blood pressure went up.

Ovarian Cyst

In 1994, I was on fertility drugs. These drugs also make you more suseptible to ovarian cysts, and every month I seemed to have them. So they would put me on birth control, I believe it would be for 10 days, altough it's been so long i can't remember for sure. That is supposed to dissolve the cyst. Then they would go back and see if it was gone (always was) but if it wouldn't have been then surgery would have been required.
However, it would have been laparoscopic surgery and D & C, not hysterectomy. Things have changed alot in the past 6 years, and I have no idea how big your cyst is or what other kinds of symptoms, or medical conditions you are dealing with, but I would have thought that hyster would be kind of drastic for ovarian cysts, unless they are chronic and you have one after another.

Ovarian Cyst

Your responses have been much appreciated. Saw GYN yesterday, she approved of Birth Control Pills as a way to prevent cysts.

Recent ultrasound showed large cyst on my R ovary and a small one on L (which has gotten slightly larger). Was finally convinced it's probably better to have a TAH, since at my age (65) these things are more inclined to persist, and why set myself up for additional surgery down the road, by only taking one ovary. Of course, this is if it's benign. If not, the attending Oncologist calls the shots.
