vaginal vault repair

Hi, everyone.

Had a TAH last August. All went well, except that 2weeks later began to feel a horrible bulge and pressure in the vagina. Turns out I have vaginal vault prolapse (which I suspect was hastened by the hysterectomy).

Have tried various creams. Queasy about a pessary, although will talk to the dr. I am contemplating surgery - he calls it a colposacropexy (using mesh, they repair the vaginal vault). Has anyone had this? He has told me it will be (another!) 8 week recovery because of the abdominal incision. Supposedly it has a great success rate but would really like to hear from anyone who has had the surgery done.

Thanks in advance.

vaginal vault repair

I had a second surgery - a sacro colpopexy- to correct a vaginal vault prolapse. The surgery required opening of the abdominal incision from the first surgery. Therefore the recovery was another 8 weeks. I was assured by the uro-gyn that absolutely nothing could ever "fall down" again after the sacro colpopexy ... but something has recently prolapsed ... and I am very upset. My first surgery was performed by a very young gyn, and I suspect it was not totally "up to par". I sought the expertise of a uro-gyn for the second surgery - and he said he has a 90% success rate with the sacro colpopexy. Guess I'm just one of the unlucky 10%. Now I don't know who to go to.

I did use a pessary between surgeries while I figured out what to do. All in all, it wasn't bad. If fitted correctly, you don't even know you're wearing it. It became part of my daily routine - insert in morning, remove at night. It must be removed for intercourse, too. There came a point where I just plain couldn't fathom doing this for the rest of my life ... so I opted for the second surgery.

Wishing you good health,
Kajsa

two surgeries and counting

Kajsa,

Thanks for answering. Jees, not a good situation. How experienced was the urogynecologist? (That's who would be performing my surgery). It definitely sounds like a second opinion would be helpful. First, though, I'd want to hear from the urogyn guy who did the sacro colpopexy (whatever) what went wrong. Is this perhaps a rectocele?

I've been reading that the dr. to go to is someone who specializes in "pelvic floor reconstruction". Now I'm not sure if that's a urogyn. dr. or someone else. Maybe start back with your fam. dr. to figure out who might be best for a second opinion.

Good luck to you. My prayers are with you.

Susan
