I wasn't crazy....I had surgery! Yikes!

I had my TAH on January 3rd. I really didn't know what to expect for pain levels afterward as I never really had surgery like this before.

After two weeks I started having a brownish/red/Gold discharge. It was worse when I would "bear down". My doctor kept me in limbo for two more weeks and said the vaginal cuff might be draining. I was in so much pain. It was incredible.

After four weeks, I felt like I had the flu really bad and the discharge never went away. Finally, last Sunday, the doctor put me back in the hospital where I went under a series of sonograms both internal and external. He was really stumped and just didn't quite know what was going on.

What they found was a hematoma the size of an orange behind the vaginal cuff. The radiologist had to drain it with a BIG needle. They kept me in the hospital for four more days giving me very high doses of antibiotics. I also had a colonoscopy so that they could rule out a fistula (connectivity of the rectum and vaginal cuff). Luckily it was just the hematoma. I should get better and better now.

Just for your information, I guess these can be fairly common although not always diagnosed properly. If you have pain and you have drainage....CALL YOUR DOCTOR!

Now at 5 weeks I feel like I've had a set-back now, I'm really tired, can't sleep, hot flashes and night sweats. I also feel like I went into de-tox when I came home...four weeks of Percocet was alot! I think I was having withdrawals.

Anyway.....that's my story. I just thought this information might be helpful to some of you post op gals....I am more than ready to get back on my feet and gear up the energy levels. When will that happen? Someone give me some good news!!!!

Happy almost Spring.....

Hi Cathi,

I'm sorry that you've experience these complications post-operatively, but very happy to hear that it seems as if you are moving forward on the road to recovery. It seems as if you have a few bumps to get over, but hopefully it will be much smoother now.

Your story really reinforces how important it is to keep your Dr. informed of new and/or ongoing symptoms. What seems 'normal' for one person is not necessarily 'normal' for another as your story shows.

Best wishes and lots of s
