SSRI Feedback needed: Sexual Side Effects

Hello, Sisters!

I am looking into the possibility of giving in to my doctor's suggestion to take a SSRI reuptake inhibitor (Paxil, Zoloft, Welbutrin, etc). What I want to know is if any of you had sexual side effects that you found troublesome.

Sex is one thing DH and I really have going for us. We both have very hectic schedules and its the one way we really connect, our special time. So, I have reservations about disturbing that.

First, my doc offered it to me because of my PMS symptoms a couple of years ago and I said "no". At my post op checkup, he also suggested that although my pain has a physical basis, that this type of medicine might help lessen the pain symptoms, should they return.

I got really stressed out last night and guess what showed up ... pelvic pain - bad enough to take a darvocet. I just have to wonder if he's onto something, here. Of course, I am still probably healing from the lap surgery, so I am not ready to make a decision like this now - as it comes to mind that I might just be physically overdoing it.

Just considering options. Appreciate any input you have on any side effect or experience with these type of medications.

s for all

This is just my experience so, take it for what it's worth.....
I take Effexor XR now and have ZERO sex drive! Took Zoloft in the past and did not have that problem with it. I would say, try one and if you seem to have a problem you can try another. Good luck sweetie! (I just PM'd you).

SSRI Feedback needed: Sexual Side Effects

I had big problems with orgasm with Effexor, Celexa, and Lexapro, some minor problems with the tricyclic antidepressants like Nortriptylene (which are better for pain), and no problems with Wellbutrin. I don't remeber whether I had problems with Zoloft, but it's supposed to be one of the less libido-inhibiting drugs.

Remeron also had little effect on my drive and response.

I'm currently on a combination of Wellbutrin, Remeron, and L-Tryptophan, and my libido seems pretty okay to me.

I always say (and some people are probably tired of hearing it) that antidepressants are like frogs. You may have to kiss a lot of them before you find your prince. Side effects of an antidepressant are usually gone for me within a week of discontinuing it.

Thanks for the replies. I have been doing some research and it looks like my is correct (as usual) in suggesting zoloft. He actually said "something like zoloft". I sort of agreed to give it a try if the pain returned, not really expecting it to (hey, I'm a natural optimist ... can't help it).

Not totally sure I am going to try it, but the last few days have been stress and pain filled. Its like a vicous cycle. I'm not sure what came first the stress or the pain, but they feed on each other.

So, seems my dear doctor might be on to something here. Going to have to keep track of the pain and the possible triggers and go from there.

Again, appreciate the responses, so far, and welcome more! No such thing as too much information!

Hello...

I took zoloft for 5 years and never had it effect my sex drive. Everything was fine for me when I took that. The only reason I stopped it was it aggrevated my RLS symptoms (restless leg syndrome) and I wanted to try 'life' without it. I originally took it for depression related to an eating disorder.

HTH,

Rita

SSRI Feedback needed: Sexual Side Effects

Michelle,
I have had experience with the SSRI's and sexual dysfunction. I can't remember which one I was on at the time but I could absolutely not achieve orgasm. As soon as I went off the med it was like magic. Everything worked again. Right now I am on Wellbutrin because I didn't want the side effects. It is one that is supposed to cause the least amount of side effects. Well guess what, I can't achieve the big "O" again. I am on a plethora of other meds so I am hoping that once some of my problems are resolved and I am taken off the meds I will be back to my body's normal performance level again. I know that things work since my surgery because before all of the meds and before being released for intercourse, but okay for outercourse everything worked great, maybe even better. I look forward to enjoying that part of my DH and my relationship, but for now I have to give that up to survive. Good luck, maybe it won't affect you at all.

Zoloft

I have been on zoloft since October and I can tell you I have not had one sexual side effect - the zoloft has been working great - the first 2 weeks were tough though, I was very tired but ever since then I have no complaints - I can't imagine not taking it.

Zoloft and Wellbutrin

Hi,
I was on Zoloft for about 10 years and during that time I didn't really notice any difference with orgasms but with some of the older antidepressants I couldn't have one at all. I was switched to Wellbutrin about a year ago and although I feel MUCH, MUCH better taking the Wellbutrin I have noticed that it is a little harder for me to have an orgasm. In my case, feeling better is worth the trade off and maybe I just needed to slow down anyway! Good Luck.

SSRI Feedback needed: Sexual Side Effects

I took Zoloft for about a year, and had some libido problems - orgasms were harder to achieve. When I was taking Lupron injections for 2 months, I had NO sex drive at all - not one twinge. The lack of sleep was terrible too with Lupron - doc had to prescribe Trazodone (antidepressant) to take so I could sleep .. that also helped with the sex drive. When I was on Zoloft, my DH was deployed to Kuwait so I never worried about sex anyways.

There are several different SSRI's you can try. I have heard good things about Wellbutrin, but never been on it. I know for me when I took Trazodone, it was a life saver.

Best wishes,
Amy

Isn't it funny just how different we all are? Welbutrin (1/2 dose) is working well for me in the libido department and, as a side benefit, seems to help some with the nerve pain from my bad cervical spine (I now have bone bridges where the discs used to be in a couple of places ).

Kelou, you may be having trouble with the Klonopin or Neurontin; Neurontin, I know, works in part by delaying nerve impulses to the brain, and that's kinda working against the whole orgasm thing...

A word of advice, too: even if everything else is working, for me orgasms are impossible unless I keep up my vaginal estrogen...just my !
