Is there anything out of the norm that I need to take with me to the hospital? Do I have to have a night gown or can I have PJ's with pants?

You don't want PJ's with pants. A short nightie is best. I just used the hospital one. I figured I'd just as soon have all my nighties clean for when I come home. You might want a robe and slippers for your walks, and a hairbrush and toothbrush. That's about all I took. I just came home in the clothes I went in.

Guess I better go shopping. Can't remember the last time I owned a night gown.

Hi

Well, personally I didn't bother taking my own nightie or pj's. I figured I'd let them do the laundry, and it is such a short period of time I didn't have any concerns about wearing the hospital gown. If you do choose to take your own a knee lenght gown would be the best, you'll have a catheter for (usually) 24 hours after surgery.

Lip balm is good to have, also phone cards. Personal toiletries also, even though if you don't take shampoo, etc they can supply those things for you.

I believe in traveling light so everything I took fit in a backpack, and then I had too much. Didn't feel like reading, so the book was a waste of space. I slept most of the time.

Best wishes!

I bought pj's to wear. I went up a size larger than I normally would wear. I wore a pair into the hospital and wore them home. I agree about using the hospital gown and other items they have for you at the hospital. Make your life as easy as possible. Please remember lip balm! I asked for some before they even took me into the operateing room. I just watched tv. to pass the time between sleeping. I took a search a word puzzle book but never looked at it until I was home a week.Make your stay as easy as possible.

i didn't even really have a chance or choice of getting out of the standard-issue hospital garb. and of course, i took way too many clothes. turns out, if you can put on clothes, you can leave. really - once the cathetor & IV are out and i could walk down the hall a few times -- i was out of there! (surgery tuesday morning, released thursday afternoon).

one thing i suggest is a little mini-shopping bag or similiar for your bed table. i was able to put all my little things in one little bag and that one bag could easily be moved for meals, etc. and it was easy to keep my stuff together.

i took lip balm, address phone book, hand lotion, reading glasses, OH -- and i borrowed my step-son's game-boy -- had a blast playing tetris and centipede (games which i had bought him so i could play on longer vacation trips).

and light reading = People magazines.

good luck!

Hi
I am 1 week post op and I agree with the ladies. While in the hospital use their gowns, it is much easier. I took easy to wear slippers but used their little booties, a bathrobe, a toothbrush, hairbrush, cell phone (charged!), and two of the most important things - hand lotion in with an EASY squeeze top and peppermints. The morphine made me itch and the cream helped with that and my mouth tasted horrible so the peppermints were wonderful. I wore the same clothes home that I went in and have been wearing PJs or lounge pants and tops ever since.
If you don't have a robe that you want to take you can ask for a second gown and wear it backwards so the opening is in the front.

Good Luck!
