Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do pre-op to help prevent gas and constipation problems following surgery? Someone I know suggested a clear liquid diet the day before. Someone else suggested an increase in fiber and liquids this week.

Hi bp,

Welcome to Hyster Sisters!! Please don't change your diet without checking with your doctor first - much of the constipation is caused from the pain meds, and most of the gas is from your bowels beginning to "wake up" again, so what you eat beforehand is less important than what you do and eat afterward.

Here are a couple of post-op articles with some different ideas to help with constipation and gas:

I found that once I no longer needed pain meds, I had fewer problems. I also ate a lot of fiber, drank a lot of water, and walked every day.

Be sure to read the Pre-Op Hints and the Post-Op Hints. They are full of great advice that will help you to prepare for your surgery and recovery.

Are there any pain killers that cause "less" gas and pain? Or is there anything we can do preop to prepare for this?

Is the pain from gas caused by the gas the Dr's use in surgery, or the kind of gas that our bodies produce...burping and flatulance? Does anyone know what can help the surgical gas pains?
Thanks....~Kimi~ Thrusday is comin' quick!!!!! YIPEEE!!!!!!!!

Hi

The "gas" that I was referring to is not caused by the gas that is used during laparoscopic surgeries. That gas is used to inflate your abdomen so that the doctor can see more easily when he is using the scope, and can be uncomfortable for a couple of days.

I had a TVH, without the laparoscope, and had flatulence and constipation. Morphine and other narcotics all can cause the constipation, but your doctor will be able to tell you what he recommends for you - in my case I found that Gas-X helped, and I used a stool softener which helped with the constipation.

Getting up and walking some each day does help a great deal to get things "moving", so to speak. I don't know if there is anything you can do pre-op to avoid it - but I'm sure others will come along soon to tell you of their experiences.

Doesn't seem to be a whole lot you can do about it. I'm still having a few days I'm cramping from gas, but after , it's so much better. Kids still carry-on because it's mom.
