OMG This stuff is gross

I am having to drink a gallon of some kindof bowel prep in perpartion for my surgery tomorrow. A man had to have come up with this recipe. Because a woman would have found a way to make it taste better. My pharmacist a woman even recommedend adding kool-aid. It didn't help. It still tastes awful. I don't know how i am going to make it through the whole gallon I am gaging on the first glass. Just thought I would get a little sympathy I am sure there are a few sisters that have had to endure this disgusting cocktail too.

Sweetie, Make it COLD, hold your nose and try and drink as much as you can at one try. Maybe chew some gum in between each drink. I never finished the whole gallon........was pretty cleaned out long beforehand. Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear you have to do a bowel prep. They are never fun. (((Emily))) gave you some great suggestions. What has always helped me most is picturing what would happen if I didn't do it and my surgeon had to work with non-cleaned out bowels... makes doing the prep seem more worthwhile, at least.

As far as the invention of the bowel prep, here is a little b.p. trivia for you:
  Quote:
In 1889, Dr. Charles Brown Fleet, a young pharmacist who moved to Lynchburg in 1869, invented and began selling his Fleet's Chap-Stick lip balm. In 1893, Fleet developed the formula for phospho-soda, the basic ingredient for the Fleet Enema. Organized as C.B. Fleet Co., Inc., in 1916, the company developed the first disposable, small volume enema in 1953 and the first disposable douche product, Summer's Eve, in 1973.
Seems that Dr. Fleet was pretty well rounded in terms of his areas of interest... brought us a wide variety of products.

Good luck with the surgery!
s,
-Linda

I think the best thing to do is to make it REALLY REALLY cold... otherwise it is really hard to get down.

I just had to do a bowel prep for my surgery on 2/4... like ((Linda)) mentioned, it was a good thing because the surgeon ended up having to work directly on my bowel for part of the surgery... so it has a good and safe purpose.

Part of my most recent surgery was a presacral neurectomy. It has left my bowels very sluggish and I am having to take the normal adult dose of the phospha-soda every few days (per the doctors instructions). It is the only thing that has worked so far (after trying MOM, multiple Fibercons, enemas etc). The only way I can get it down is to keep it in the fridge and then put it in really cold water.... and then I just chug it down as fast as I can.

Best of luck tomorrow with your surgery. I hope all goes well with no complications.

Yep, that stuff is My sensitive tummy does not like that stuff at all. Not to mention that I blow up like a balloon and sit for hours and hours before having a bm. Tastewise, I did find it helpful to suck on a mint in between glasses.

Good luck tomorrow!

P.S. I know it's a little late now, but I've heard that there are pills that you can take so if I EVER have to do a bowel prep again I am asking about the pills.

Yes, there are pills you can take... however, in my case, when I had to do the prep for my IVP (took place at my Pre-Op), it wasn't instead of the phospho-soda, it was on top of the phospho-soda and... as if that wasnt' enough... I also had to us a suppository.... I guess they wanted me to be really cleaned out before the test

Taking it chilled does help. I was told to add ginger ale to mine and that worked fine... turned me off ginger ale for a while, but, at least, it was palatable.

It should be almost gone by now - hope your done with it all.

Cold is good. I was told to mix mine up in the am. I put it in the freezer for about an hour before I need to drink it. Cold does help.

I did it so often while was was being worked up for my cancer dx (about 4 times in 6 weeks) that I tried all the flavors. Stay away from Cherry.

Compared with pills, I think this one is yuckier going in, but a bit gentler coming out (less cramping), although I am sure other sisters will respectfully disagree.

I can relate very much with the Bowel prep stuff...I had 12 inches of my colon removed in l991 and I had to do all that and more. But, I did all that was necessary plus wasnt allowed to eat anything but jello 4 days before surgery. So, good luck with it. I hope I wont have to do that since I'm having the LAVH.

Bowel Prep - UKKK!

I was so disgusted by the taste that I added about 1" of apple juice to each glassful which cut the taste enough to make it, should I say ... more tolerable - and gulped each glass as fast as I possibly could.

With all of the artificial flavors out there, I find it really hard to beleive that they can't make it taste better.
