bad hospital stay

Hi Im post op now mine being total abdominal hysterectomy on Feb 18th. The op itself was not the problem the after care was diabolical! due to staff shortages I was left in bed for 2 days on the third I tried to get up myself and got stuck between the bed and the floor. in the afternoon i again asked to get up and was put on a commode and left alone by the bed despite the fact i was feeling very dizzy. i felt myself going and had to throw myself onto the bed making my staples bleed in the process some 20mins later i was found behind the curtains by the woman serving the dinners!

despite needing help myself the next night was spent looking after the woman in the bed opposite who was in great distress having told the nurse that she was in great pain and being given paracetomol it was discovered the next day after scanning her bladder that her bladder was 2 times the size it should have been the pressure was unbearable as she could not urinate.

needless to say i was so glad to get home after 5 nights of very little sleep and really bad food and very little after care. I just hope to god i never have to go in again.

Sharon, that sounds awful, poor you. What part of England are you? I am in south west, and had a good experience. Great staff etc, nothing to much trouble. Have you complained to the hospital? they take a lot of notice of negative comments, and have to reply and act on them within a specific time period.
Your experience is not the norm, and needs to be addressed.
I work in a hospital and would be horrified if one of my patients was treated like you were.
I hope you feel better soon, please don't let this affect your recovery

You must definitely complain. It may help the next lady who is put in that situation.

I was in a private hospital - luckily I had BUPA cover through work, so my care was good. I have had various gynae ops in NHS hospitals throughout the years, no stays as bad as yours though.

I know the nurses are under alot of stress but that is no excuse for poor care. Complain to the Hospital Administrator, if you do not get a satisfactory response send a letter to the Government Minister, I think it is John Reid.

We all pay for the NHS through our taxes and someone needs bringing to account.

Sorry for the rant... but it really pees me off.

I am sorry your stay was so bad. I actually thought mine was bad, but I now realize it was so much better than it could have been. I wrote a letter to my hospital, but have not recieved any reply at all, but I would think that your experience warrants some kind of apology or something. I hope you have a better experience in your healing process at home. Good Luck!

I will say this, my doctor was right about being better off at home. I've had surgeries before, a number of years ago. I know that times have changed, but my god, the cost is sky high and the care is an abomination. My mother had come to stay while I was in the hospital. I told her before going in that I would need her and my sister to take turns staying with me because they don't have the staff to take care of the patients. She didn't believe me. My stay was much like the other horror stories, left in the recovery room in screaming pain, being yelled at by the nurse saying she'd given me enough pain meds, stuck there for 5 hours because they couldn't (or wouldn't) find me a bed, then, the pain pump wasn't working and after pleading, the nurse from he** told me they didn't have any other pumps... I was awake all day and all night after surgery. I had finally gotten enough pain meds by 8 a.m the next morning that I was feeling ok. Then, they came in and took out the iv that was delivering some of the morphine, left the pump that wasn't working and back to pain I went. It got worse from there. I was left alone in my room (private) for 10 hours. My mother showed up and I was going crazy. She asked why the room was such a mess.. the nurses etc. who had been in my room during the night just threw things on the floor. They didn't have any of my medications, fed me what I wasn't supposed to eat, the doctor yelled at them, so they were really not happy with me after that.

someone told me that if it happened again, to call 911. I would have loved to see what would have happened. My bed and nurse call controls had fallen on the other side of the bed and I was stuck in there for 10 hours. I finally had a melt down. It was a nightmare!!!

Wasn't too pleased with some of the things that happened to me in hospital, but it certainly wasn't as bad as yours Beak! As you say, there were not enough staff to look after the number of patients. I was told to wear the white stockings, but the nurses only twice had time to help me put them on. Another patient, a lady in her 70's had to help me on with them until my I was able to do it myself 3 days post op. Hope your recovery at home is gooing well. I would definitely complain if I were you.

Hi Beak,

I'm an R.N. that works in L/D and postpartum. We occasionaly have hyster patients on our unit. It saddens me to hear how aweful your care was, staffing shortages or not. One of the best was to address this is a letter to the CEO of the hospital and the Director of Nursing. Give specific dates, hour, etc. and your account of things that happened. Believe me, when the CEO and Director gets these letters, the Nurse Managers of the unit will here about it. It doesn't help you, but may help the next person recieve better care. I hope you're beginning to feel beter now. It does take time. Welcome to the other side.
